Ozokwenza

You will walk with me or one of my fellow team members through the main roads and the back streets of the picturesque old town. You will learn about the Mafia, its brutal violence and its business, as well as about the people who stood up against the power of the organised crime.

We will stop in front of monuments, memorials and shops, each is connected with a particular aspect of our story. Sometimes a small detail, that seems unsignificant at first glance, has a story behind it that is worth to be told.

You will meet shopkeepers who have said NO to the protection money and hear their stories: you will also have the chance to support them, just buying a gelato, some local products or a souvenir of Palermo.
Other things to note
You can recognize me because at the meeting point I will have a "No Mafia" bagpack on my shoulder.

IMPORTANT! The tour is offered in English, Italian or French, depending from the dates. Please scroll down this page and choose the correct date/language in the section "SEE MORE DATES".

I was born and live Palermo, Sicily. I graduated in History and I work as a trip leader. I love to get in contact with different people and cultures, either by traveling or by meeting my guests here.
I think that the best way to express our love for our country is to show its most authentic face and to try to change what we do not like about it. This is why I am an activist in an anti-mafia movement called Addiopizzo, which encourages the shopkeepers to rebel against the protection racket.
I have been volunteering for Addiopizzo since the beginning, in 2004. I am proud to say that many things have changed since then. On behalf of Addiopizzo I give speeches and lead tours: people are eager to learn what the Mafia really is, behind the stereotypes. I can give them my personal experience as a Sicilian and as an activist.

Mayelana nenhlangano: Addiopizzo Travel

Addiopizzo is a grass-roots Anti-Mafia movement, founded in Palermo in 2004. Its mission is to push the community to rebel against protection racket. Addiopizzo built a network of shops and business whose owners refuse to pay money to the Mafia and encourages ethical consumerism to support it. The organization gives assistance to the victims of extortion and promote cultural and social activities.

Starting from the magnificent Teatro Massimo, symbol of the rebirth of Palermo after the terrible years of the Mafia violence, we will explore the traditional open-air market, stop at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Mafia, discuss about the role of the Church in front of the Cathedral and that of the politics at the City Hall, pass through piazza Magione and end the tour at the famous restaurant Antica Focacceria San Francesco.

Der var en meget informativ og interessant vinkel på mafiaen og betydning heraf tidligere og i nutiden leveret af en meget engageret fortæller.

It was an interesting morning. Eye-opening. Three hours was a bit too long given it was a lot of talking and not so much seeing.
