Ozokwenza

We will meet in downtown Franklin (park or coffee shop, depending on weather) and will discuss the concepts and the basics of writing. I typically like to discuss traditional Southern writing, with emphasis on Southern Gothic. Think "A Worn Path" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find." We will cover character development, dialog, theme, and other aspects of the literary experience.

We will be doing some walking, but not too far. This will not be your boring high school English class; think Dead Poet's Society.

Our goal will be to create our own short story, as well as cover art, and we will carry this forward to online publication. Time likely will not allow the story to be complete and edited, but I will later edit the story and correct the grammar, and the story will be published online (KDP Select - Amazon) either under my name, a pen name, or that of the client/group - your choice. Many new writers are also interested in self-publication, and we will discuss the costs and concepts of the various stages of editing, interior layout, cover design, and the process of placement on Amazon & print publication through companies such as Ingram Sparks. This will be something like "flash fiction," but we will work together to create a complete short story. The event will conclude with cover design concepts, which I will finalize, then complete and publish after our experience.
Other things to note
This is a 2.5 hour experience, so we will be able to discuss a lot of Southern history, tradition, and literature. But I think it would be fun for you to bring your own stories and experiences, and for us to write our own stand-alone story. Any topic. I am not a boring English teacher.

I studied English at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and I have always had an intense interest in literature, especially Southern and Southern Gothic. My "The Battlefield Guide to Life" won the 2017 Janice Keck Literary Award for non-fiction, and in 2019 I published "Memaw's Maxims." I have written several short stories, published under my name as well as pen names. For 30 years I have worked as a copy editor and I pride myself on my expertise, especially to grammar and editing. My literary heroes include Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Stephen King, Robert Heinlein, and anyone who writes from their soul. I devour everything: sci-fi, historical fiction, memoir, & biography. I love to discuss authors, writing, blogging, publishing, dialog, vernacular, and style. I hate boring!
