I'm going to teach you the importance of female self-defense techniques. To do so, I've chosen a selection of moves to help protect you from physical harm, and prevent your strength from weakening. All I ask is that you focus, and follow the exercises and instructions. This training session is not just to broaden muscles for a quicker, more graceful appearance. It’s also intended to help raise awareness around violence against women by providing teachings on how to protect yourself.

With conflicts, disputes, family arguments, and other trauma throughout the world, women have been—and continue to be—put under great pressure. They experience physical, emotional, and mental abuse, both inside and outside their homes, leading to enslavement through direct or indirect ways. I hope this training session can help raise consciousness, and provide a base for combatting these day-to-day challenges that impact females of all walks of life, all over the world.

My name is Amir Al-Awad and I’m an 18-time wrestling champion, and a passionate teacher of self-defense. I’m also a Refugee Olympic Team scholarship holder and an IOC Refugee Olympic Team hopeful for the Tokyo 2020 Games (postponed until 2021).

In 2011, my family and I were forced to flee our country in fear. After a long journey, we settled in Egypt. Then, with the help of friends I met while there, I founded what has now become the Syrian Sports Academy. Funded by the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and other organizations, this 30-square-metre training hall provides scores of young refugees with a sporting home and, often, a sense of identity.

And now I’m here to take self-defense training to the world at large.

This was my first Airbnb online experience and I couldn't have asked for more. Amir is a great athlet who has overcome so much and now he's training for the Olympic Games. He really is a model to us all and I'm so haply I had the chance to get to know him. He shared his story and he taught us some basics self-defense techniques! Very interesting and important topic. A lot of focus on exploiting weak joints which can be done for by people of any size. Try to have a second person around so you can practice with a real person. During the instruction, it might be easier to follow if the English translation was typed real time rather than spoken later.
