See the Central Otago land first travelled by the Māori people and learn about the customs and traditions that still thrive with a whakataū/welcome. We'll visit an area where the first non-Māori people—European settlers guided by the chief of the Tuturau—visited in 1853. You'll connect to Māori culture as you experience the Wero/Challenge laid down by a Māori warrior brandishing a Taiaha and learn the traditional Hongi greeting—where you press your nose and forehead together with another person—and why it is done. I'll teach you the Haka, a Māori dance specific to the region of Central Otago, and explain what each action means. The Whakataū will take place even in light rain as the Maori of the 1700’s did not have access to rain jackets and neither shall I. Experience the authenticity and originality as it should be. PS I can provide umbrellas.
There are 2 different meeting points for this experience and you will be advised of the meeting point the day before your Māori Welcome date is scheduled. Both locations are relatively close together.
Other things to note
If you can't see suitable availability, send me a message and I'll see what I can do to host you.

I'm of Māori heritage. My great-great-great-grandparents were among the first people to settle in Central Otago. I have a deep love for this area and a strong connection to it. I want to share my passion for Māori culture and offer you a personal journey through our history and region. I support the 'Tiaki Promise' where we encourage international and domestic travellers to experience Aotearoa New Zealand in a way that keeps everyone safe, protects our environment, respects our culture and protects our country for future generations.

From Wanaka lakefront CBD, it's a 5 minute drive for you to our meeting point. We'll stand where Māori walked and hunted for food, and we'll experience the traditions of the Māori people. You will be challenged (Wero) with the Taiaha to confirm why you are here.

This is both a very educational experience and a deeply meaningful experience of what it is to be and know Maori wisdom, both current and ancient traditions and spiritual connections to the land and time itself. Thank you Joe for sharing this with us and so many.

The welcome experience is so powerful and moving, my husband and I continued to discuss it afterward. Learnt a lot about Maori culture and history of South island. Joe's demonstration and explanation of the wero, hongi and haka were so fascinating. Learning how the haka is actually unifying a diverse population is amazing. If you want to learn about Maori culture, this is a must do. Joe is extremely humourous and you will love every minute of this enthralling experience. Wish I had time to do the wine tour as well :)

This is a one of a kind experience taking you into the local culture of the Māori people. Joe is very knowledgeable as you walk the grounds of the Māori hunting and settlements learning their customs and history. Recommend this over commercial experiences. Much more personal and individual experience.
