Visit to the Tanneries in Fez to see the Leather Workshop
Our visit will include Chouara Tannery which is the largest of the four traditional tanneries still existing in Medina. It is composed of numerous dried earth pits where raw skins of sheep and cows are treated, pounded, scraped and dyed. They use various coloured liquid dyes derived from plants sources such as indigo, poppy flower... etc.
From the neighbouring terraces, it is possible to admire the spectacle offered by the Cheouara Tannery, a panoramic view of coloured pits.
The Chouara or Tanners Quarter has been located near Wadi Fes since the Middle ages. Its dyeing vats, in the midst of houses in the Blida Quarter, are the best seen from neighbouring terraces. Although pervaded by an unpleasing strong smell, this is the most lively and picturesque of all the souks in Fes.
You will surely enjoy this different experience and new handcraft.
