Do I need a special license when I plan to guide tours?
Offering guided tours to tourists is generally a regulated trade under Austrian Trade Law and you will need a specific license (Gewerbeberechtigung als Fremdenführer) that requires proof of competence. Read more about what constitutes tour guiding and the trade license requirements.
Exceptions can apply to tours that only point out sights or points of interest along the way but do not involve further information or background information about them. In this case, a trade license as a tour attendant (“Reisebetreuer”), which is a free trade and therefore needs no proof of competence, may suffice. Read more.
Please contact the local trade authority (Gewerbebehörde) or obtain legal advice to make sure you are complying with Austrian Trade Law.
