Which alcohol-related activities require a license?
In Denmark, an alcohol license is required for commercial sale of “strong beverages”, which also includes beer and wine. The alcohol license will be issued for a given location, which also may be a private home.
You require this license when you sell alcohol for profit (not only to cover your expenses). The same applies even if guests bring their own alcohol and in most cases also applies to educational sessions such as wine-tasting or cocktail making, especially if offered on a frequent basis.
If your experience takes place at a bar or a similar licensed establishment, the venue’s valid alcohol license is generally sufficient.
How can I apply for an alcohol license?
The license is obtained from the Police Department and further explanation is given on the Police Department website. On this website, you can also find the key requirements pursuant to the Danish Act on Restaurants to obtain an alcohol license.
In addition to the key requirements the authorities also consider the suitability of the licensee, the size and furnishing of the intended premises, and the location. It may be more difficult to obtain an alcohol license for use in a flat or other private home in a densely built-up area.
Operating without a license if one is required can be punishable by fines and even imprisonment so you are strongly recommended to check all applicable rules before offering experiences including alcohol.
Is there anything else I should think about?
If you'd also like to include food as part of your experience then please refer to the section on Experiences involving food in Denmark. Please also make sure that you check the zoning rules that apply to your area.
