Wintergreen Resort Overview: This 11,000 acre resort in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains is a good choice for sports enthusiasts as well as families who enjoy hiking and the outdoors. Well known for its award-winning children's program and outstanding golf and tennis facilities, Wintergreen also offers extensive hiking trails, indoor and outdoor swimming, mountain biking, boating, fly-fishing classes, equestrian facilities, and a spa and fitness center. The resort is comprised of two settings separated by a 20-25 minute drive: a mountaintop resort center with cooler temperatures and a full range of amenities; and the Stoney Creek Valley setting with golf, tennis, a lake, pool, dining and equestrian facilities. For families with active kids and teens, the resort's Out of Bounds Adventure Center allows guests to challenge themselves on a 25-foot climbing tower, play paintball, mountain bike down plunging slopes, try out the new bungy-trampoline, and test their skills on the resort's 13,650 square foot skate park. In addition to its many amenities, the resort also offers a varying weekly schedule of special activities and events with family appeal. In the winter months, the resort's downhill skiing and snowboarding facilities are a magnet for guests. Wintergreen has distinguished itself by offering a wide variety of family-friendly activities and amenities for all seasons of the year.

Stand-Out Features: Beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a wide variety of options for the sports enthusiast, excellent hiking and nature programs, creative children's programs, and the Out of Bounds
Adventure Center.

Restaurants: While many families choose to cook their own meals in their rental home, four full-service dining options are offered at Wintergreen. The Copper Mine Restaurant and Lounge offers
breakfast, dinner and dessert menus with special brunches during the spring season. The restaurant is rather expensive in price, but the food is delicious and children's menus are available. The Devils Grill Restaurant and Lounge, located at the Devils Knob Golf Course, offers
a club-like atmosphere with patio dining during the spring and summer seasons. Here, kids menus are pasted into children's books to provide additional meal. The Edge is the most casual restaurant, featuring a large screen TV and live entertainment. Menu items include sandwiches, salads and burgers, and lunch and dinner are served daily. In the valley, the Stoney Creek Bar & Grill provides alfresco dining with panoramic views. For casual dining at home, families will save a considerable amount of money by cooking their own meals. There is a grocery store - the resort's Blackrock Market & Deli nearby (2 miles ) with good selection of gourmet deli sandwiches and salads, fresh baked goods as well as made to order pizzas. You'll also find a variety of gourmet cheeses, crackers, chips, vinegars, yogurts and jams and jellies. But if you want reasonably priced fresh meats and fresh seafood, stock up at one of the stores in Nellysford (10 miles), Waynesborro (25 miles ), or Charlottesville (40 miles).

Children's Programs: Wintergreen's award-winning children's programs are just one of the reasons why both Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens magazines selected Wintergreen as one of the "Top
Family Resorts in the Country". Programs are held at the Treehouse, a spacious, airy building central to mountaintop activities. Registration is required for all Treehouse programs, and it is strongly suggested that guests call before they come to make reservations. Children are grouped according to age and ability with appropriate staff/child ratios. The following programs are available: Kids in Action
(Ages 2 ½ - 12): Available weekends from March to June, daily from mid-June through early September, and during weekends in the fall. There is one weekend in the fall and one weekend in the spring when this program is not offered - call the resort for specific dates. Location: Treehouse. There are visitor and resort guest rates with partial, all day and second child discounts. Activities for ages: 2 ½ - 5 include
hikes in search of butterflies, nature programs, songs and finger-painting. Activities for ages 6-12 include optional sports clinics, field trips, and nature programs, and outdoor play during most of the day.
Early or late hourly care in the Treehouse is also available for the one-hour period before and after Kids in Action. Kids' Night Out (Ages 6-12): Offered Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, from 6-10 pm, for pizza, swim at Wintergarden, ice cream sundae socials and movies. Friday is "Cinema Splash" and Saturday is "Lake Night". Kids Night Out is also offered during other times of the year. Kids' Night Camp Out (Ages 6-14): Offered Wednesday nights in July and August (from 5 pm Wednesday to 9 am Thursday; minimum 5 pre-registered kids for program to take place) rain or shine. Tents are pitched and kids camp out under the stars with sunrise breakfast the next morning. Junior Explorers (Ages 8-14): Offered daily from July 1st through Labor Day. Explorers hike, canoe, tube and rock climb to various locations. Some additional fees are charged; no half-days; no age exceptions; minimum of 5 pre-registered children required for the program
to take place. Teen Connection programs are offered at varying times during the year. These programs typically last for several hours and are free of charge. Call the resort of specific dates and times.
Babysitting Services are available at Wintergreen through a placement service arrangement. For a small placement fee, the Activities Department will arrange for a sitter to come to a guest's home or condominium. A 3-hour minimum is required. Sitters are not guaranteed, and must be requested at least 48 hours in advance.
WILD Nature Camp (Wilderness Interactions Lead to Dreams for ages 6-12) are weekend and holiday programs to help children learn about nature through hands-on activities such as, exploring nature for clues about rocks, water, plants, amphibians, birds and Native Americans. OWLS Adventure Camp (ages 12-16) from August 5th-9th: The Outdoor Wilderness Leadership School (OWLS) is 5 filled days of rock climbing and rappelling, kayaking, mountain biking, camping and backcountry travel. Private Child Care: Childcare in private accommodations can be arranged (placement/referral fee charged and rates from $9 per hour with other stipulations). Awesome Kids' Parties: The Wintergreen staff puts on 2-hour wacky, wet and wild water sports or beach parties at the Blackrock Pool or Lake Monocan with craft parties, circuses or Fun Olympics at the Treehouse for ages 3-12. There are themed pony ride parties, too (Indian dress-up ponies or unicorn pony outfits). There are tennis clinics for kids offered at Wintergreen. Special riding camps,
as well as tennis and golf programs for kids and teens are also offered. Wintergreen's Treehouse Children's Programs are extensive and vary by season. For more details, call the resort or visit the resort's website.

Golf: Golf is one of Wintergreen's strong points, with 45 holes of championship golf and a silver medal from Golf magazine. Wintergreen's 11,000 acres extend from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the valley below, allowing the resort to offer two distinctly different golfing experiences. In the summer, golfers can take refuge in the cool breezes of Devils Knob, the highest course in Virginia at nearly 4,000 feet. Temperatures on the Devils Knob course are generally 10-15 degrees cooler than those in the valley. In the valley, on the other hand, guests can generally golf year-round on the nationally ranked 27-hole
Stoney Creek course designed by world-renowned golf course architect, Rees Jones. Free shuttle service is available to transport guests between the top of the mountain and the valley - about a 20-25 minute drive. The veteran staff of golf professionals has extensive experience in hosting and coordinating local, regional, state and national golf tournaments. Golfers may wish to take advantage of Wintergreen's value-packed "Stay and Play" 2 to 7-night packages for couples or foursomes. The Wintergreen Golf Academy also offers 3, 4
and 5-day clinic packages. Golf groups of 16 or more can enjoy additional discounts and professional staff assistance. Wintergreen also offers junior golf clinics and a Junior Golf Camp.

Tennis: For 16 consecutive years, Wintergreen's Tennis Program has been rated by Tennis Magazine as one of the nation's top 50 tennis resorts. Most recently, TennisResortsOnline ranked Wintergreen as the number 5 Tennis Resort and number 2 Tennis Academy in the country. The Devils Knob Tennis Center offers both Deco-Turf indoor and Har-Tru outdoor courts, and four outdoor Har-Tru courts are also located in the valley at Stoney Creek. During the summer months, Wintergreen offers its Mighty Mite Junior Tennis Clinic for children ages 6 and under, and a Junior Tennis Clinic for kids ages 7-14.

Hiking and Nature Programs: Wintergreen has 30 miles of marked hiking trails, many of which provide spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Three not-to-be-missed views are the Wintergreen
Overlook off Wintergreen Drive, the Blue Ridge Overlook off Devils Knob Loop, and the breathtaking views from the Plunge, about a 1/3 mile walk from Blackrock Circle. The Wintergreen Nature Foundation (TWNF) runs year-round programs and guided hikes, and maintains an award-winning nature center at the Trillium House.

Swimming: Wintergreen's outdoor pools are a great place to escape the heat on hot summer afternoons, while the indoor pool and hot tubs beckon on cool fall nights. The Wintergarden Spa features both indoor
and outdoor pool, as well as hot tubs and locker facilities. Outdoor pools are also available behind the Mountain Inn and in the valley at Stoney Creek. If you plan to take your family to the pool during
the week in the hot summer months, plan to bring your own refreshments as snack bar service is only available on the weekends. From mid-June to early August, 4-day Red Cross swim lessons are offered by licenses WSI instructors to non-swimmers through advanced levels (Monday - Thursday for 45 minutes, rain make up day is Friday). Private half-hour swim lessons can be arranged. During the summer months, lifeguards are on duty to supervise swimmers at Lake Monocan, the 20-acre lake in the valley.

Other Activities and Amenities: Wintergreen's spa services include a variety of massages and body treatments, as well as pedicures, manicures, and facials. Guests must be 18 to use the spa on their own, but younger teens can receive treatments with a parent's written permission. Wintergreen's adventure park, the Out of Bounds Adventure Center, offers a slew of adrenaline-pumping activities, including in-line skating, mountain biking, paintball, the new bungy trampoline, a 25-foot climbing tower, basketball, volleyball, and a skateboard park with half-pipes and quarter-pipes. The Out of Bounds rental shop provides trail maps as well as the finest names in sporting and safety gear. Out of Bounds is open during the spring, summer, and fall months. Boating and fishing are also offered at Lake Monocan. In addition to the resort's amenities, a wide variety of weekly activities are also offered. Activities vary significantly by week and by season. Check the resort's website or call the Activities Department (ext. 8180) to find out more about the specific activities planned during the time of your visit.

I have signed up as Airbnb hosts in March of 2016. As a big city dweller in the past, I am thrilled that I can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of central Virginia. As a naturalized US citizen, I am interested in the American history, traditions, and a way of life.
