This home was built by one of our ancestors, Louis Napolean Midgette, a fisherman/farmer/carpenter over a hundred years ago. The people in pictures hanging on the walls are family and either lived in the house, had a hand in building it or maintaining the farm long ago.

Now our family loves sharing the home with others who appreciate the charms of an older house and want to discover/enjoy Roanoke Island while visiting the Outer Banks.

The interior has white bead board walls and ceilings in most rooms. It retains an old island feeling that has been updated with modern conveniences such as central air conditioning, heating and Wifi.

For those who need to work remotely during their stay rest assured the internet speed (specifically in the front room where desk is located) is: 104/7.

INTERNET: RenterNet will support all your Internet issues during your stay. If Wifi fails please always be sure to unplug router and plug it back in as this may do the trick.

If internet is not restored please call RenterNet at the number posted on magnet. They will troubleshoot, assist and advise with any issues and if necessary schedule a repair visit. They are a local provider and you will have access to a real person to help you!

In many seasons it is comfortable inside with screen doors to porches open for ventilation. The side porch is screened in with chairs for comfortable lounging. The porch offers a great close to a summer day, relaxing on the screen porch in a rocking chair with a refreshing beverage to the tune of frogs and cicadas.

Newly added to the home is a private outdoor shower providing easy rinsing off after a day at the beach. It is enclosed completely and just to the side of the screened porch, very private while enjoying the outdoors. In the spring and summer you can bathe under the purple blooms of the crepe myrtle. Please take care to rinse off here after the beach before entering home. This will keep sand out of the house during your stay. Thank you!

TOWELS/LINENS:
Beach/bath towels provided. Bed is dressed with fresh clean linens.

BEACH GEAR:
Two beach chairs (on side porch) are available to guests, no umbrella but we can recommend a rental agency.

KITCHEN:
The kitchen is updated but is stocked with only the basics for cooking, such as pots and pans. No mixers for baking or extensive cooking tools. No oil or spices provided as amenity. There is a drip coffee maker and a teapot.

Please be aware before booking that there is only one bedroom available. While we love children and are parents ourselves, the home is not suitable for children. It is not childproofed.

Also note we don't provide a grill and due to our concern of maintaining this older beloved home we don't allow grilling on the property. Thank you for understanding.

Guests have the whole home to themselves during their visit (we will not be in the house at all) however, we ask guests to make themselves at home on the first floor only.

We reserve the upstairs as a private space.

If you have never stayed on Roanoke Island while on the Outer Banks, consider spending a few nights of your vacation here and then trying another spot on the beach. We have a small cottage in Kill Devil Hills as well, The Little Cottage!

Roanoke Island and the waterfront town of Manteo is a beautiful place, quieter and more removed from the busy traffic and hectic pace of the Outer Banks' beachside towns. You may rent bikes from Kitty Hawk Sports right on the downtown docks and explore the bike trails that take you to the north end of the island to Fort Raleigh/The Elizabethan Gardens. You may also rent kayaks or paddle boards which are perfect for the calm sound side waters surrounding the island.

Minutes from the home you can also visit Wanchese (to the south end of island) a small fishing village with seafood restaurants and an industrial boat yard crafting yachts.

The island offers museums, one of a kind shops, art galleries, extensive nature trails to bike/walk, (mostly) gentle sound side waters and more to explore. We will send our area guide upon booking your reservation with us.

Please note our check-in time is 3PM and our check-out time is 11AM.

Ideal location on Roanoke Island that is far less busy than the beachside communities while allowing quick access to both the ocean and the town of Manteo. Nags Head beaches are a five mile drive away where guests can find plentiful parking at local accesses and piers. In downtown Manteo there is lots of free parking so guests can walk the waterfront town or rent a bike, kayak or standup paddle board if they choose.

Our property has a barn out back where a local woodworker and artist keep studios. In the back of the yard is a small pond and some space to walk if you wish.

Across the street from the house you can access the Coastal Studies Institute property and have waterfront access to the sound. Great spot to take in a sunset or access the public use nature trail (head of trail is marked by a sign).

Following this nature trail will take you to the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge. If you choose to do so, you can continue on another biking/walking trail into the waterfront town of Manteo by crossing, carefully the 4-way intersection where the CVS drugstore is located. From the house it is about a 2 mile walk into downtown.

We will send you our local suggestions when your reservation is confirmed with many dining and sightseeing ideas. As well as information on beach accesses we love and recommend.

I am a retired school teacher and my husband was a teacher and a principal as well. Our knowledge and love of the area runs deep and we truly enjoy welcoming guests to the Outer Banks.
