Our beautiful, airy, newly-renovated barn loft apartment is now available for short-term rentals. It's surrounded by 3 acres of fields and trees and set back from the road, yet situated within the town. Solid early 20th century post-and-beam construction is layered with modern conveniences like a gorgeous wide-board pine floor, granite countertops, and comfy couches.

Indawo
This is a beautiful, recently-renovated loft space with 2 bedrooms (one with a queen bed and another with a double bed), a large upcycled wooden plank dining table, a spacious living/dining room (with a couch & airbed for an extra guest), and a back porch that looks out on a grand old elm tree. Note that it is an open format; the bedrooms don't have ceilings (but rest assured the bathroom does!).

Note: There are some colder nights here on the coast of Maine, so be sure to bring your wool sweaters and dive under our down comforters. There are a couple of space heaters and it is well insulated after the 2016 renovation, but it is a wide open space with tall ceilings, so it may not maintain a perfect temperature.

The 2016 renovation included new wide-board local white pine floors, repainted walls, and pocket doors. The kitchen has a new gas range with five burners, there's a new fridge with plenty of room; granite countertops from a local quarry in Deer Isle; semi-custom wood cabinetry; a deep farmhouse sink; a coffee maker and grinder; and plenty of cooking and baking gear. The bathroom was redone with a modern slate and porcelain shower stall and wide showerhead.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Guests will have access to the entire loft above the barn. Entrance is either through the barn, where guests will find the central staircase, or around the side on the walkway.

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
Our tenants in the main house are not involved with the loft rental, so please don't bother them with questions about it - thanks.

It can get chilly! The entire barn is insulated, and we do have electric space heaters to take off the fall or spring chill, but high ceilings and no central heating.

For cooling, there is a small fan at the barn's peak which is operated by a switch on the center wall, between the two bedrooms. If switched on in the morning of a hot one, it can usually keep the loft comfortable all day. If needed (not too frequently), there's the Mother of All Fans in the front of the loft overlooking the driveway - it's operated by a switch on the wall to the left of the fridge.

Blue Hill, Maine, i-United States

Blue Hill is a lively, thriving community, with a quality of restaurants, coffee joints, and breweries rivaling that of a larger town. Right next door is the red brick beating heart of the town, the Blue Hill Public Library. On the corner of Parker Point Road and Main sits Pet Provisions. A couple of doors down is Peninsula Provisions, where you can find award-winning chocolates, coffee, ice cream, and gifts. In the same location is Fairwinds Florist, which seasonally grows many of the flowers it sells. Merrill & Hinckley grocery/convenience store is at Main & Union Street. Continuing down Main St. and across the bridge is Bucklyn Coffee across from the Post Office, featuring locally roasted coffee beans you can grind at the barn and made-to-order coffee and espresso drinks . Past the PO, the Blue Hill Wine Shop sits atop a slight hill on the left, with many more tasty treats than wine, like imported Italian sundries and top quality cheeses, espresso, local bread, exotic beers and tea. A bit further on is the famous FishNet, at the intersection of Main and the East Blue Hill Road, serving hard or soft-serve ice cream, lobster rolls and all sorts of deep fried seafood and other yummy eats. If you're looking for something slightly healthier, the Blue Hill Co-op is where to find ready-made wheat berry salad and the New York Times. (It moved to a new, expanded location on South St. in August 2019, and is now the largest co-op in Maine!) If you head toward East Blue Hill, you'll go past a beautiful old graveyard open for the walking public, and the next right is the Boatyard Grill, which has good seafood, burgers, and a laid-back vibe, with occasional live music.

Up Tenney Hill (a left out the driveway), there is the award-winning restaurant Arborvine and its casual sister brewery Deepwater on the right. Up Tenney Hill, take a left on the rotary onto South Street, and you'll find the small supermarket Tradewinds and pharmacy Walgreens on your right. Next door to Walgreens is the Turnstyle, a second-hand store and food pantry that converts your clothing and shoe finds into food for local families (open only 2 or 3 days a week). Follow South St. another 1/4 mile, and you'll find the aforementioned Blue Hill Co-op on your left; go another 1/2 mile past that, and you'll arrive at =Barncastle, a really great combination pizzeria / bar / inn / occasional live music venue.

The loft's location is unique. Situated between a classic white steepled church on one side (Congregational) and a red brick library on the other, there's a lot to do in little Blue Hill, especially in the summertime. The library sponsors a wide range of activities, including speakers, book readings, and a lot of children's activities such as classical music concerts and children's book author readings; it also has free wifi so you'll see half the town there on any given day. The Blue Hill peninsula is a creative hub of artists, writers, and other creators. There's a handworks gallery on Main St., which sells crafts such as silver hoop earrings, wall art, and handknit sweaters. The Cynthia Winings Gallery down Parker Point Rd is a carefully curated contemporary sculpture and painting gallery in a large old barn. Our mom, Dindy, is a director for the highly acclaimed theater company, New Surry Theatre, which performs at the Town Hall. There is a waterside town park near the hospital down on Water St, which hosts steel band concerts on Monday nights throughout the summertime.

Come experience our enchanting little neck of the woods on the coast!

Hey everyone - I'm basically a laid-back guy, environmentally-minded, having grown up in Maine. I just graduated with an M.S. in Sustainability Management at Columbia. I love all kinds of music, especially jazz, world music, and reggae; and several sports, particularly biking, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. I spent a year in Costa Rica teaching English. Favorite movie is the Princess Bride. I love getting back up to our loft in Blue Hill, but if I or my sister aren't there, we figured we'd make it available for people! Hope you enjoy it (pretty sure you will - we love it).
