Punta Cana, La Altagracia Province, i-Dominican Republic

How far from a market, food stores and shopping is your condo? Can I walk there or will I have to take a taxi?

There is a large modern supermarket in the Punta Cana shopping center, which is about 10 minutes away by car, but it is not walking distance.

The supermarket "El Nacional" is situated at Punta Cana Village, where you can find a wide range of food and drinks, as well as fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and fish. The Village has nice restaurants as well. You need a car or a taxi. The taxi service (Taxi Beron) charges 50 dollars (roundtrip) and they wait for you while you do the shopping.

The shuttle service is done by the same company and they charge 2 dollars per ride, but only within Cap Cana. You just call them (+1 809.466.1133) and they pick you up.

Other services the taxi company provides:

Airport transfer 30,- US$ (max. 4 people one way)

Cap Cana to the commercial center San Juan or Palma Real, 80 dollars round trip and they wait for 3 hours.

Transfer to the restaurants at Punta Cana Village, 30,- US$ one way. They can pick you up at the agreed hour.

Are there any restaurants in the area that are close (walking distance)?

A shuttle service connects the various hotels, Golf Club, Marina where there are nice restaurants with ocean and marina views.

Please see above. The only restaurant you can walk to, other than the one right within the Sotogrande resort you are in, is the Sanctuary Hotel and Juanillo Beach (lunch) 5-10 minutes. All the others are by car, shuttle, golf cart or bicycle.

I really recommend to rent a car or a golf cart, as Cap Cana is big and very nice to explore. From a previous guest regarding renting a car:

“Budget was pretty cheap its $200 for the 5 days with a GPS included. I went with one up from economy, I think it’s a Kia Rio. I just did it online but used a 30% off coupon code from

Costs of renting a car versus taxi's as we would not travel around the country - Any shuttles as we would stay primarily in the complex

I would check out Budget as well as other companies picking up the car at the Punta Cana airport. There are shuttles within the Cap Cana complex, but these may not provide access to the nearby Supermarket La Nacional which is in the Punta Cana village near the airport (about 10 minutes away).

Golf carts may be rented on site for about $50 per day, and there is also a bicycle rental service that will deliver the bikes right to Sotogrande.

I recommend Scape Park for different excursions, like Zip Line, buggies, horse riding, boat trips etc.

Across from the Supermarket “El Nacional” my favorite Italian restaurant is Mama Luisa (I still remember my 13-year old daughter going cross-eyed when she tasted her first 4-cheese ravioli), also at the Village (where the supermarket is) you can find as well the Bistro (French restaurant), a nice Spanish one "El Tablao" and a Mexican restaurant "El Burrito" among a few others, but these I have gone myself.

Next to Shopping Center San Juan there is a very good restaurant called "Noah".

Within Cap Cana I can recommend Costa and Capuccino in the Marina, Aquamare (as well in the marina, but more expensive). In Marina Sands (before it was called Fishing Lodge there is a restaurant called Bistro. I highly recommend Dux (in Marina Sands as well) which is a beautiful place for a drink, before or after dinner overlooking the Marina. Sunset is nice in Dux (around 7 p.m.)

Santo Domingo is about 2 1/2 hours away from Cap Cana, but there is a brand-new divided superhighway most of the way. I recommend below a beautiful hotel in the old city center.

If you only want to go for a day, unless you like the full local experience, then I may recommend booking an excursion as the city itself is a little chaotic by US standards and it is better not to drive in the city itself unless you have a local GPS as otherwise you may find it too complicated (again this depends on your level of desire for adventure!)

Any recommendations for restaurants both casual and fine dining?
There are so many that I suggest pinging Trip Advisor their list is very always very comprehensive… Please let me know good (or bad) experiences to pass them along to other guests!

Golf Info: Costs for my wife and I to play 9 holes of golf either morning or afternoon if cheaper with or without cart?

I would contact them directly at letting them know that you are renting a property within the Cap Cana resort (they apply a lower rate). Also, here are some comments from a recent guest regarding an alternative golf course.

“You did send us info on the discount for Punta Espada Golf Course, but still at 235 US or 160 US for twilight, plus Cart for another $20 US each, it would run us $510 US or $360 US for twilight. La Cana, which was still very close – Was $140 US and $106 each for twilight (off season rates) and included the cart plus the other services Espada offered. We went and looked at both courses and found for our level of play, the La Cana course was perfect and still allowed us to play along side the Caribbean. The service was great and we had a lovely lunch at the restaurant. The Course is divided into three 9 hole courses and we were able to pick the combination of 18 that we wanted to play. I do not have a contact there, we just went to the course and walked around - they even offered us a cart to ride around to look the course over; then we booked. I understand that Oct is a bit of a slow time, which may have been why they were so flexible. We do highly recommend the course – and I have attached the website

Access to tennis courts and how many and whether night and day and any fees?

The front desk at the Sotogrande may give you more information regarding the tennis courts, I am sure that you would have access to use them at a fee in one of the many facilities within Cap Cana, see The best suggestion is to check in with them, although usually in person they are more flexible and probably cheaper than through the official web sites, especially if you are friendly and reasonably dressed and express interest in perhaps staying there in the future...

Shopping for food for our meals and what would it be like to eat within the complex. Prices?

The best shopping would be at La Nacional, a modern supermarket with most US brands. The prices for imported goods will be higher than the US, and local vegetables, produce, etc. will probably be the same or cheaper.

The condo is attended by our trusted housekeeper that will prepare the apartment prior to your arrival. If arriving during the day, she will greet you to give you the keys, and if after hours, she will give you the code to the lock box right outside the apartment door. I recommend that you the purchase your food at the modern supermarket 5 minutes away by car, very close to the airport. I recommend renting a car with a local GPS to give you the maximum freedom to explore the many beautiful areas, plus the local taxis are ridiculously expensive!

Can you give me directions to your condo from the airport and tell me what the procedure is for getting the key to your condo?

Best thing before you arrive is to install the WhatsApp application on your smartphone. Please send a message by WhatsApp in Spanish to our housekeeper Darianna at +1 (849) 912 7960 when you are ready to leave the airport, tell her who you are, she will meet you at the Sotogrande lobby or in the apartment itself (Unit 2304) to give you the keys and show you the apartment.

I highly recommend you rent a car and a local GPS unit, as many roads are not very well marked, it will be very useful to better explore all the beautiful areas of Punta Cana, and many units have restaurants and attractions coded into the data base of the unit.

I suggest printing out a Google Map from the Punta Cana Airport to the Cap Cana Marina (within Cap Cana, it is the exit before Sotogrande), but you can see Juanillo Beach with is right next to the Sotogrande complex.

When leaving the car park from the Punta Cana Airport at the first roundabout you take the first right. Go straight (now you see on your left hand side Punta Cana Village. Here are different small and nice restaurants, as well as the supermarket "El Nacional”. At the following roundabout, take the 1st right. You are still on the same road. Now keep left and after aproximately 200/300 meters, the 1st exit to your left is the Cap Cana Exit. If you go straight forward you go either to La Romana and Santo Domingo (by the new motor way) or to Veron and Bavaro.

Now you follow this road during aprox. 3-4 kilometers until you find the entrance gate for Cap Cana.

Please tell security your name and that you are going to Sotogrande 2304. They have been notified by me by email for you to be authorized to enter and I will copy you on this request also, which I suggest you print out and carry with you.

Now you are in Cap Cana! After 200 meters there is a roundabout and take the 1st right. You are now on the main boulevard. You take the 2nd left at 2 km. aprox. The first left is the Marina and the second left takes you to Juanillo/Sotogrande. Follow this road until the end, there is one possibility to turn left which takes you to the Sanctuary hotel and Juanillo Beach. At the roundabout you will see Sotogrande in front of you. Please take the entrance and go up to the lobby.

At the lobby there will be some staff or maintenance who can help you with your luggage. They can indicate where the garage is so you can park your car in the assigned parking space. From the garage you can go straight into the garden, but this you will find out when you are there.
