Welcome to this cozy retreat on Roanoke Island, 2 miles to the charming town of Manteo/village of Wanchese and 5 miles to Nags Head beaches. This spot is located on an old farm and is restful to come home to after exploring the Outer Banks. For those who bike/run/walk, take advantage of trails throughout the island. Sound side access directly behind retreat via The Coastal Studies Institute, great place to watch sunsets or stroll on their public access trail. Retreat is for 1 or 2 people only.

Hiking/Biking trails await you if you wish to explore the island this way!
The home is close to the Coastal Studies Institute run by East Carolina University. There is a newly built hiking trail leading from the Coastal Studies' property to the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge. From there if you carefully cross the street at the 4-way intersection you can continue on the trail in front of the drugstore further into the waterfront town of Manteo. The trail head begins at the Coastal Studies Institute near their waterfront docks and is available for use by the public.

Additionally the Coastal Institute is a great spot to watch the sunset over the sound waters. You can access the Coastal Institute property behind the wooded retreat.

Don't miss Manteo a charming waterfront town with many unique shops and restaurants. Fun to explore by bikes, which can be rented at Kitty Hawk Sports in downtown on the waterfront. Kayaks and paddle board are here as well perfect for navigating the tranquil sound water and marshes.

You can have a delicious dinner at Blue Water with views that satisfy as well overlooking the marsh and marina. Or try Olives Greek Kitchen and dine outside on the town docks picnic tables. Take a daytime/sunset cruise on a sail boat. Many boat tours leave right from the town docks. Try a beer flight at the Full Moon Brewery and sample their hand-crafted ales. So many great places to explore.

And of course the public beach accesses of Nags Head are minutes away, short ride across the bridge. And farther south, about twenty-five miles there is the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Wooded Island Retreat is close to all, yet far from the busy pace of summer traffic and crowds.

Please be sure to check amenities listed as it will help with your planning and packing. Our kitchen has no oven, just a stovetop.

Please note there is no grill and no grilling allowed due to our concerns regarding fire safety. Thank you for understanding.

We advise guests visiting in the summer months who are looking to hike the Coastal Studies trail to come prepared with light layers or bug spray. The critters can be pesky in the woods during the warm weather.

Additionally PLEASE take the time to read the reservation details we send as the landmarks can be very helpful for arriving easily. The wooded retreat can not be seen from the road, so the reservation details we send can be helpful to those who are not familiar with Roanoke Island. Thank you!

While we are pet owners and lovers ourselves the home can not accommodate pets or more than two people. We make no exceptions and appreciate you respecting our policy. Thank you!

Consider staying at the wooded retreat for a weekend or for several weeks and let yourself ease into the pace of island living.
