A fully equipped, rustic, one bedroom fishing cabin overlooking the Margaree River. Margaree Forks is a great place to get away from it all, yet remain close to everything western Cape Breton has to offer. Visitors who only desire to be near the Highlands Park might consider staying in Cheticamp, or even the eastern side of the Island.

The Shackteau was my dream retirement fishing cabin. It was not designed to be an AirBnb, nor was it my original intention to open an Airbnb. As a result of my travel experiences I became a big fan of the original Airbnb philosophy of sharing your space. With built-in electric baseboard heat I have stayed comfortably in the cabin from April to November.
Of course, there is always work to be done and there is a slight slant to the cabin floor that I have repaired as much as possible. If you are not steady on your feet this might be a concern.
The cabin is equipped with all the cooking appliances and utensils you could need: stove, toaster, toaster oven and microwave oven. There are lots of pots and pans too. I provide coffee, tea as well as the typical condiments and seasonings. There is great set of bluetooth speakers you are welcome to use. The wi-fi is the fastest available and remote workers have used it successfully for their work. I do recommend bringing slippers if you visit during the spring and fall.
The veranda is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery and on a clear night the stars put on a full show.
Note: The rental is for two people, and possibly a pet. The convertible couch is intended for occasions when two guests sleep separately.
New for 2022, and going forward, a big change has occurred on the property. The cabin is no longer the only building on the property. Construction has begun on our actual retirement residence and we should be moved in by May 2022. Guests will be sharing the property with us. If you require complete privacy you will need to look elsewhere. It’s difficult to reassure potential guests that we will give them the space they require and not intrude on their privacy. I will continue the guarantee I’ve offered to previous guests. If, when you arrive, or even at some point during your stay, you realize the arrangements are not suitable I will refund the balance of your payment (minus the Airbnb deduction, of course).

This is a rural setting. My neighbour is a farmer. There are two seasonal cabins down the lane, but out of sight. The view of the river and the hills has an almost magical effect on your mood and well being. It is stunning. There is a Co-op grocery/liquor store a short drive away, and a Library/Visitor Centre with free wi-fi at the Forks. No matter where you stay in Cape Breton everything a visitor would like to do will require driving. I believe Margaree Forks is the best location for a visitor who wants to do it all.

I'm a recently retired teacher. My wife, Wilma, manages an office with a forestry non-profit, and is about to retire. Beginning November 2016 I began looking for destinations for my wife and I to get away from our cold Canadian winters.
We have 2 children, our daughter lives in Brooklyn and works in an Art Gallery. Our son is studying in China.
I love to travel. I lead school groups to Europe. Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon is a passion. Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland/Labrador, Iceland and Norway have been on my list of locations visited.
Nature and photography is important-flowers, trees and birds.

The cabin is not a motel nor a business venture with round the clock staff or managed by an agency. Some Airbnbs are intended to be just an exchange of accommodations for money where the owner and guest remain more or less anonymous. This not my intention. Meeting my guests is important to me and a source of pleasure. You may have done your homework before arriving but I'm still happy to share my experience and opinions about Cape Breton—if you are interested. I like to be flexible regarding check in and out, but it can cause a problem when guests check-in later than planned or guests neglect to communicate their arrival plans.
The solution is communication. I will message you the day before your arrival with full driving directions and options and also to get an idea of when you expect to arrive. You are free to request an early check in and go about touring the area after we meet.
Cell coverage in Margaree is still spotty, so I provide my wife's cell number. If you contact Wilma when you reach the Causeway she will be certain to notify me that you are on your way and when to expect you (normally a 1hr15min trip from the Causeway) I can only be reached via the wi-fi network at the cabin, whereas Wilma has her cell phone with her at all times.
