This cottage is one of the oldest in this part of South Wales. Located in the Rhondda valley, one mile from Pontypridd, and dating back to the 17th Century, this historic cottage is brimming with character. Today, it is part of a hamlet of former colliery buildings and miner’s cottages built in the 19th century, testament to the rich history of coal in the area. The cottage is surrounded by a wonderful garden, a great place for children to play and explore.

Indawo
The Exterior
The cottage is reached by a private drive leading up to a beautiful and very spacious garden which surrounds it. The cottage is positioned on the side of a hill so there is quite a slope to access it and some of the garden is also sloping. There is gorgeous (and flat!) south facing terrace with a summer house, picturesque cottage garden borders, lavender beds and a lower lawn with mature trees. The property enjoys views of the valley below and surrounding hills. There is plenty of outside seating for breakfast, lunch or dinner"alfresco". There is also a BBQ and a small fire pit (you will need to provide your own fuel for these).
There is ample parking space, enough for at least 5 or 6 cars, and there is indoor storage space for bikes.

The interior
The cottage itself has thick stone walls, stone floors and original oak beams. Downstairs, the two living rooms have large inglenook fireplaces with baking ovens and oak lintels. There is a small kitchen with the usual appliances including a dishwasher, microwave and fridge freezer. There is also a small lobby area where coats and boots can be left.
In the colder months the fireplaces may be used and kindling and firewood will be provided (1 basket per stay and more may be purchased from the hosts). There are two original spiral stone staircases which lead to the upper floor from each of the living areas. Upstairs there are three bedrooms: one double master bedroom with vaulted ceilings; a very large Studio room with vaulted ceiling including 4 single beds; one small double bedroom. The bathroom includes a bath and shower.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Utility room (including washing machine and tumble dryer an extra charge will be made for this)

Cowshed - this is adjacent to the farm house. It is a large building with flagstone floor, tables, chairs. By prior arrangement with the hosts and at an extra cost this space can be used by the guests during the day time.

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
The spiral stone stair case, the very large garden and the sloping aspect are all features of this very lovely property, however, for those with children and those with mobility issues these features do present their difficulties and challenges. Please be aware of this and supervise your children at all times and take great care around the property.
Another thing to note is that the cottage is made of stone and the floors are all flagstones, whilst that makes the cottage very charming it can also be quite cold, even during the summer months so please bring a warm cardi and a cosy pair of slippers.
Finally, as we have said we welcome pets, just to let you know the outer perimeter of the garden is enclosed and there are gates at the entrance, however as it is a large garden you will need to keep an eye on your pet.

The cottage is very well situated for many activities. Cardiff is no more than 20 minutes away and there is plenty of sightseeing and shopping to do there. The other way on the A 470, the Brecon Beacons National Park is again about a 20 minutes drive, you can visit the wonderful waterfalls of the area or climb Pen y fan.
More locally we are well situated for cycling and walking - the Taff Trail is not far from the cottage.
The nearby Rhondda Heritage Park demonstrates the rich history of the area. Part of the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Trehafod, it is one of the top heritage and cultural visitor attractions in South Wales. Facilities include the 'Shift in Time' Guided Tour which shows what life was like for those working in the mine.
Legend has it that a noteworthy and celebrated inhabitant of Troedrhiwtrwyn Farm was Evan James, the author of the Welsh national anthem – Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers). According to family legend, his son James James was walking one day in January 1856 on the banks of the river when the melody for Hen Wlad fy Nhadau came to him. When he gave the tune to his father, Evan James was able to compose the words of the present-day Welsh national anthem.
A memorial to Evan James and his son, in the form of two figures, representing Poetry and Music, stands in Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd.
