The tiny house we call "The Cottage" is a detached guest cottage that feels like a boutique hotel suite with private entry and garden, street parking and Wi-Fi. It features light-filled contemporary cottage decor, bathroom with large shower, dining/work area, small kitchenette, laundry room, walk-in closet, and screened porch with ceiling fan and bubbler fountain. An ideal retreat in one of Washington's charming historic neighborhoods. More personal than any hotel room stay.

The Cottage is perfect for extended stays or as part of a road trip stopover due to laundry facilities in the space. There is also a fully equipped kitchenette that provides you with all the cooking utensils, tools, and cutlery you may need for simple meal preparation.
*Please note the kitchenette is not a complete full-sized kitchen. The oven is a small toaster/bake style oven, the microwave is standard sized and the cooktop is your choice of one or two induction hot plates. There is no dishwasher or disposal. If preparing gourmet meals is one of your priorities during your stay The Cottage will not be a good fit.

*Some of our guests come to paddle the river ways. We can accommodate a secure location for your kayaks or SUP's if you prefer to off load them from your vehicle.

We are in the North Market Historic District of Washington, NC. It is a quiet family neighborhood close to the waterfront, parks, Harbor District river docks, downtown shopping district, and restaurants. Vidant Beaufort Hospital is 2 minutes (1 mile) from our location.

I'm a Theatre Arts professor at East Carolina University (ECU) originally from central Florida. After a career in theatre took me all over the world, I went to grad school with goals of teaching young artists in the field. Fortunately, I was hired at ECU in 2002 and eastern NC became home. I met my wife, Catherine, in 2009 and we purchased the Washington, NC house in 2012. It's a historic property requiring lots of TLC... and it has kept us busy. But, home restoration projects and creating garden/green spaces bring us great satisfaction... we're DIY addicts through and through.

We have two amazing adult children and are grateful for the life we've created together. Catherine and I also enjoy travel and aim to explore somewhere new each year. We've recently been to Greece, Ireland, Martha's Vineyard, and Lake Louise/Banff, Canada. This summer it's Western Carolinas for river kayaking with our little cockapoo, Finn.

We love to host at the guest house we call The Cottage. We've taken tips from our favorite hotels, B & B's and vacation rentals in an effort to create an ideal destination for our Airbnb guests. We've met some fantastic people as both hosts and guests, and think Airbnb is an ideal platform for travelers.

My wife, Catherine, and I both work full time in jobs that often have one or both of us working extended hours. But, we are always on call for you during your stay. A detailed "Welcome Guide" in the cottage will provide a thorough orientation to the space and amenities. On our travels we've often booked lodgings providing lots of social interaction, but we also appreciated lodgings that offered us a true getaway with the freedom to come and go as we please at our own pace. We've set the cottage up for this sort of accommodation. While we consider ourselves welcoming and friendly, the cottage is ideal for those seeking little intrusion on their itinerary. The kitchenette allows guests to self-cater meals as needed. An assortment of breakfast items are provided for you and are complimentary. We will meet you for check-in whenever possible or touch base with you personally after your arrival by your request.
