Beyond the end of the road, with views across Clashnessie Bay to the spectacular Sutherland hills of Quinag, Ben Stack, Arkle and Foinaven, you will find Laid Bothy.

It is a traditional single storey stone cottage, renovated sympathetically and to a high standard. The rooms are warm and cosy, with underfloor heating under natural slate tiles. Walls are natural stone and well-insulated wood panelling. There is a well-equipped modern kitchen off the cosy living room, a high-spec. shower room, and a bedroom with a king-size double bed. There is also a large entrance hall with plenty of space for boots and coats, and a concealed washing machine. The Bothy is ideal for individuals or couples.

There is free wifi. There is also a television which receives Freesat channels.

The house is attached to a byre on one side and is set on a working croft, with rare breed Hebridean sheep, pigs and hens, and Highland cattle on the neighbouring croft. Produce from the croft may be available to purchase, depending on the time of year you visit.

Laid Bothy provides a peaceful escape from the pace of modern living, without compromising on comfort and is an ideal base for exploring the magical landscape of Assynt and the Northwest Highlands.

Clashnessie Bay, with its large sweep of sand and gently sloping beach, is a short walk away (1 km round the coast or 1.5km along the road) and has a car park if you want to transport equipment there. There is also a small stony beach at the bottom of our croft where we launch our kayaks. The main beach is very safe, although we recommend wetsuits if you are going to be in the water for long!

There are other excellent beaches nearby, at Clachtoll and Achmelvich, walks to suit all ages and levels, from the All Abilities Path near Loch Assynt, to the Munros of Ben More Assynt and Conival, not forgetting iconic Suilven, Quinag, which you can see from the Bothy, and the other beautiful hills of the Northwest Geopark.

This is a mecca for geologists, with a visitor centre at Knockan Crag and a cafe and exhibition at Rockstop in Unapool.

Those interested in historic buildings can visit the ruins of Calda House and Ardvreck Castle near Loch Assynt, the old kirk at Inchnadampf and the newly excavated broch at Clachtoll.

You can go on boat trips from Lochinver and Kylesku or visit Handa Island, an RSPB reserve where puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and kittiwakes nest in the cliffs, not forgetting the skuas who may dive bomb you as you walk across the island!

There are small but well-stocked licensed grocery shops in Clachtoll, Drumbeg and Lochinver and a Tesco in Ullapool. Drumbeg Stores provides a delivery service for advance orders.

Lochinver is also famous for its pottery, where you can see articles being hand-painted, and its pie shop, and there are many places to eat there at all price levels.

I am a retired teacher, running a croft with my husband, David, a retired GP, in the northern highlands of Scotland. We have Hebridean sheep and a border collie called Shep. I like hill-walking, sea-kayaking, travelling and people. I have used AirBnB to stay in many different parts of the world and now am able to offer accommodation to guests wanting to visit our beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands. We live on site, in a modern house on a level 30 metres above the Bothy and are available for advice or to sort out problems if needed, but will respect your privacy if you don't want to be disturbed.
