Kinooni* House is one of the most ancient houses on Historic Lamu Island.
Once the home of the Governor of Lamu, who was then the emissary to the Sultan of Zanzibar in the end of the 18th century, it has now been carefully restored with traditional Swahili design and craftsmanship to bring back the elegance, simplicity and grandeur of the original mansion

* Kinooni means “the place of the sharpening stone”
so Nyumba ya Kinooni means : “ the house of where the sharpening stone is”.

Kinooni House is extremely spacious. Numerous verandas and terraces make living in our house a luxurious pleasure. The rooms each have their own bathroom and are quite independant from one another. They each have a double bed. The house can host a total of 8 guests.
This house is a true luxury oasis in the heart of historic Lamu Town where behind the rough outside walls you will discover enchanting architectural elements .
This is our vacation home , a retreat where we come three times a year for a couple weeks. We are happy to share it with you, hoping you will enjoy it and respect it.

Kinooni House draws its name from the sharpening stone that was brought just across the corner of Kinooni House during the seventeenth century for people to come and sharpen their blades on it. The stone is still there. ( Ask Abdul to show it to you) . The neighbourhood is called Kinooni from it.
This area of Lamu is called stone town because it has the biggest and most prestigious houses, set on top of the hill with a commanding view to the sea and over the town scape.

Abdul is our manager. He will take care of your every needs, will answer your questions and help you all along your stay.
Kalenga is our cook. He can adjust his expert talent to your special needs. Just ask him what you want. His cost is included in the rental.
Abaraham and Sanita are our two stewards taking care of and cleaning the place, doing your laundry, maintaining the pool and garden. Their cost is also included in your rental fee.
Food costs: the only added cost you will have to pay is the actual food for Kalenga , the cook , to prepare for you. You can ask him for specific dishes, tell him about your dietary preferences, or let him decide for you and surprise you. You will have to pay 2000 shillings per day per person in cash to the manager Abdul for the daily float towards buying the food for breakfast , lunch and dinner everyday. Each dinner taken at Kinooni will also cost an overtime charge for the staff of 700 shillings per dinner, also to be paid to Abdul our manager in cash. In case you decide to have dinner outside of Kinooni, please tell Kalenga and the staff in advance. In this case your daily food float cost will be reduced to 1300 shillings. Thank you.
