Rambling Rose cottage is a gorgeous quirky character filled double story stone clad cottage in Irene village. It has a lovely thatch roof, & the ground floor ceiling & beams are made out of thick slices of old African hardwood railway sleepers. This gives the cottage a ‘game lodge’ ambiance with an African twist. The cottage is decorated with family collected furniture, original paintings, & a large Iranian Persian rug. Netflix, uncapped WIFI on fibre, all included.

Indawo
Rambling Rose cottage is set in the village of Irene (proclaimed in 1902), and is 64 square meter in size. Its gorgeous thatch roof makes going to sleep in the king size bed cozy and special. The armchairs and sofa are super comfy, and perfect for relaxing in.

Coffee (French press/plunger/cafetiere and instant coffee) and tea are included together with essential cooking condiments. Breakfast is not included.

The cottage is situated on a larger property together with the main house, a wild indigenous garden, and large pool. The beautiful old Irene Dairy Farm established in the late 1800s, is 400m away as the crow flies, or a mere 7 minutes’ walk (you will need me to open the security gate at the bottom of the road for you, if you wish to take the short 7 minute walk there, but a longer 15 minute walk back as the gate is operated only one way).

The large bedroom is upstairs. It has a King size bed with 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, desk and chair, with 2 comfy armchairs and a sofa. The TV has Netflix and WIFI with unlimited data on a fast fibre connection. The kitchen, bathroom, and lounge/dining room with the large sofa, armchair, dining table and chairs are downstairs. NOTE: The stairs between the two floors are steep and may be tricky for elderly people, especially at night (but it is well lighted).

At night time, the lighting has been designed to maximise the coziness of the wooden features, bathing the cottage in a soft warm glow, with reading lights above all 3 armchairs and the sofa.

The cottage is set in our ‘wild bush’ garden made up of our own "forests, grasslands and wetlands". We have worked hard on it over the past 25 years to makes us feel like we are in our very own nature reserve, away from the busy sights and sounds of the city. We have recorded over a hundred bird species in our garden and are regularly visited by a troop of vervet monkeys (well mannered - so far) and bush babies (a small cute primate, that looks like a tiny monkey with big eyes for night vision). The Irene Dairy Farm resident chickens have taken a liking to strolling from the farm up to our home and through our garden every day, much to the amazement of our dogs who are not too sure how to handle this. The cockerels crowing in the morning at the bottom of the road, make you think you are living on a farm. Amazingly, we still occasionally hear the howls of wild black backed jackal at night, that live across the road on Irene Dairy farm.

The cottage is independent of the main house and has its own front and back gardens. There is outside seating in the front, as well as at the back garden. You are welcome to use the pool and the thatch boma braai (BBQ) area which has an open fireplace situated in a forest of trees. Both are situated by the main house. Two very loving dogs also live on the property, who think that everybody loves them. But we realise not everybody does. So if you are not a dog lover, we have fenced the cottage front garden off to keep them away.

Centurion, Gauteng, iNingizimu Afrika

Irene is a unique village in Pretoria. It was established in 1902 and was originally part of the Irene Dairy Farm, which still operates today and is a central part of village life. Irene is 25 minutes’ drive from OR Tambo International airport, 20 minutes away from Pretoria city center, and 10 minutes’ drive from Centurion town center. We are surrounded by 3 large shopping centers with plenty of restaurants, large food retailers and chemists that are only 5-10 minutes’ drive away.

Rietvlei Game Reserve is 12 minutes’ drive away. The 4 000ha game reserve is unique in that it is within Pretoria’s city boundaries and has a large diversity of wild animals. This includes rhino, buffalo, hippo, and many of the plains game such as a wide variety of antelope and zebra. Daily entrance fees are cheap - the same price as a ticket to go to the movies! This place is a real bargain if you want to see wild animals in a large reserve, and it’s just down the road.

The beautiful old Irene Dairy Farm established in the late 1800s, is 400m away as the crow flies, or a mere 7 minutes’ walk. The farm is stunning to walk around with its old buildings, and big oak trees. You can freely walk around this working farm, see and touch the baby calves, and watch their mothers being milked in the parlour. It is open during the day time from 8am -6 pm, 365 days of the year (because the cows need to be milked every day). It has 2 restaurants, and a well-stocked delicatessen farm shop, also open during the same hours. The raw milk and thick cream are legendary.

I work in freshwater conservation for a charity called the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). I completed my PhD in environmental education and social change and use this to support WWF's water stewardship work . I love traveling and in the early 1990's travelled from London to Sydney overland over a 2 year period. No flying, just bus's, donkey carts, trains and on foot. What an adventure. Definitely to be repeated again.I have 2 very loving dogs who keep me amused and entertained. What makes my world go around? Good food, wine, travel, interesting people and the environment.
