The Old Tack Room is a cosy dog friendly cottage located in a peaceful & rural hamlet near Northumberland National Park & Rothbury. It’s the perfect location for exploring Northumberland’s stunning countryside & coast - a walkers & cyclists paradise. Located in the Dark Skies park, it means that at night time, as there is no light pollution, the stars illuminate the sky like fairy lights!

Indawo
The Old Tack Room is located on a former Victorian farm steading, that has been developed into a stunning set of stone holiday cottages, which are set out in a courtyard formation. All of the cottages are individually owned. This cottage, as the name indicates, was formerly the tack room for the farm’s horses.

The steading was originally built by Lord Armstrong (who created Cragside) as part of his vast estate, designed to be a Victorian model farm as a showcase for his pioneering engineering methods and was one of the first farms in the world to be powered by a water turbine.

Situated in a pretty and tranquil hamlet on the edge of the beautiful Northumberland National Park, and at the foot of the Cheviot Hills, it is a haven for walkers, cyclists and star-gazers alike. A wealth of walks and cycle trails can be enjoyed directly from the cottage and with the area being the largest Certified Dark Sky Park, it is certain to appeal to all lovers of the great outdoors.

With the addition of shared grounds and a tennis court, it is perfect for couples and families alike and 2 well behaved dogs are welcome too. (Sorry, no puppies or dogs under the age of one allowed.)

All the accommodation is on one level. It has electric heating throughout, with the added benefit of a huge Scandinavian wood-burning stove to provide that extra warmth and ambience during the cooler months (an initial supply of logs is provided between October and April). Free wi-fi is available throughout the cottage and, as there is no mobile signal, a telephone is provided for emergency calls.

Dine and relax in front of the cosy wood burning stove which will keep you toasty on even the coldest of nights! Along with a TV, you will find a Bluetooth Soundbar, Amazon Echo (Ask Alexa!), DVD player and free Wi-Fi. There are a range of films to watch and books to read, as well as local maps, tourist information and a selection of games to play.

The kitchen has solid oak block worktops with an electric oven and integrated ceramic hob, fridge and freezer, washer/dryer, microwave, kettle and toaster. There’s also a Dolce Gusto coffee machine, but you’ll need to bring your own pods.

The bedrooms are beautifully furnished and there is plenty of storage space in the form of solid oak wardrobes, chest of drawers and bedside cabinets. Quality bed linen is provided in both rooms.

The bathroom has a very large walk-in shower, wash hand basin and toilet, with luxury towels provided.

Outside, at the front of the cottage is a small paved and gravelled area with outdoor furniture for 4 - this area is not enclosed, but there is also use of the grounds, including use of the shared tennis court, (rackets and balls are provided in the cottage) and a children’s play area. If you have dogs, there is a large, safely enclosed area, for them to let off a bit of steam. (Please ensure you pick up all doggy do-do’s).

There is off-road parking (for one car) directly opposite the cottage, with further parking onsite.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU INFORM ME IF YOU INTEND ON BRINGING A DOG & LET ME KNOW THEIR AGE & BREED. (PUPPIES NOT ALLOWED, SORRY). THANK YOU.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Guests have full access to all of the cottage - apart from the loft.

Please note - there is no mobile signal here (which is a blissful respite from the rat race!) You don’t have to travel far to get a signal, but please be sure to print off or download all instructions for the cottage before you arrive, as you won’t be able to access them on your mobile device until you get inside the cottage (to use the Wi-Fi) 👍

Northumberland National Park, i-United Kingdom

The nearest major village to The Old Tack Room, is Rothbury. It is actually classed as a town, but it has more of a village feel and here you will find the award winning Rothbury Family Butchers and the quaint little Rothbury Bakery amongst other village stores, including a well stocked Co-op. There’s a great selection of pubs and restaurants here too.

Your nearest good pub/restaurant (11 minutes by car) is the Three Wheat Heads at Thropton - it has the most amazing views of the Northumbrian valley and the food is excellent too.

There is a very quirky pub within a short walk from the cottage, called “The Star Inn”. It is a little piece of history - untouched and run by the same family since 1917, it is like stepping back in time. Now run by Vera, who is in her eighties, drinks are limited (wine, beer and soft drinks), and as this pub is a traditional old pub, she doesn’t serve food or nibbles (apparently she doesn’t like greasy fingers on her glasses!) Opening hours are sporadic (look out for the light switched on outside to let you know she is open). But, don’t let that put you off - Vera will welcome you with open arms and the pub undoubtedly keeps her going, so it is well worth a visit, if not for the experience alone.

The cottage is absolutely perfect for those who want to walk straight from the door into the National Park and Cheviot Hills (knowledge of orienteering is advised). It also has lots of cycle trails (including the Sandstone Way Cycle Trail) and plenty of hills!

It has the feel of being completely rural, yet it is only a few minutes from some very pretty Northumbrian villages and 30 minutes from the spectacular beaches of the Heritage Coastline. It is within easy reach of Cragside House and Gardens, Wallington Gardens, Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands, to name but a few of the many ‘must see’ attractions.

The Old Tack Room is within an hour’s drive of the spectacular Hadrian’s Wall and also Kielder Forest and Reservoir - Kielder has an abundance of wildlife and activities, especially on the lake in the summer, as well as having the Observatory to see those starry skies!
