Casa das Oliveiras is a small, family-run guesthouse in the heart of the Algarve in southern Portugal, offering bed and breakfast accommodation. It stands in a quiet rural setting, and yet is only a short drive from some of the region’s finest small beaches and the old Moorish city of Silves. The guesthouse is an ideal spot to unwind and relax by the pool; you can come and go as you please. It is also perfectly located for day trips to the west coast or as far as the Spanish border.

Indawo
The house is surrounded by an ample garden with old olive trees all around, as well as cork oaks, carob and other fruit trees. The guest room, which has a large double bed and a private bathroom, is in a self-contained part of the house and has direct access to the pool terrace. Whenever the weather is nice (which is most of the time), we serve breakfast on the terrace. Otherwise breakfast is served in the indoor breakfast room.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Guests will have access to their room and en suite bathroom, to the terrace and swimming pool. Guests access their room via the front door and a corridor.

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
How Casa das Oliveiras is operating during the current health crisis

Our overriding aim is to be able to offer our guests accommodation at the same time as minimising the risks for all guests and for ourselves. We regret that this means we will be reducing our interaction with guests (normally one of the things we most enjoy!) to a minimum. To reopen our guesthouse cautiously, we are making the following changes, which override any other information on other platforms:

Infection prevention
In line with Portuguese law, guests must wear masks when inside the communal areas of the property. Please provide your own masks as far as possible. We will have spare masks available if necessary. Hand sanitiser will be provided and guests must use this before entering the premises and regularly while in the guesthouse, especially before/after touching shared facilities e.g. the fridge. Social distancing of 2 metres must be maintained between different groups of guests, and between guests and your hosts. Guests will be expected to observe normal rules for hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.

Guests are asked to postpone their visit if they have symptoms of Covid-19 before their arrival. Equally, guests are asked to inform us if they develop symptoms within 14 days after departure. Guests must inform us immediately if they develop symptoms while here. We will contact the relevant authorities.

Capacity
We are reducing the number of guests we will accommodate at one time from 10 to 4/6; we are reducing the number of rooms that will be occupied at one time from 5 to 2/3. We are leaving a gap of 4 days between each reservation of a room, three days in quarantine and one day for cleaning.

Facilities
We are limiting the facilities we are offering our guests; guests will have access to their own room, to the terrace and the pool. The reception, guest lounge/breakfast room and kitchenette will be closed, but the fridge will be available for guests to use. Guest rooms will be equipped with a kettle and items for preparing hot drinks. The telephone (landline) at reception will only be available for emergencies. Wifi will operate as normal.

Cleaning
Guests' rooms will not be cleaned during their stay. Extra towels, toilet paper etc. will be available as normal. Communal areas (e.g. the entrance, corridor) will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Breakfast
Individual breakfasts will be served to guests at an outside table. In the event of poor weather, breakfast will be served inside, and guests will be asked to stagger their breakfast times, so that one group has breakfast at a time. Breakfast may be slightly simpler than in normal times, and we will ask guests to select their breakfast items in advance. Breakfast will comprise: orange juice, cereals, yoghurt, milk, bread, butter, jams, tea, coffee, hot chocolate. Guests are welcome to supplement this with their own items if they wish.

Checking in
To reduce the amount of face-to-face interaction, we will ask guests to send us the details we require for checking them in by email/message in advance.

Swimming pool and terrace
The pool is treated with chlorine, and official advice is that this is safe. The pool surround and shower will be disinfected regularly. No toys (e.g. inflatables) will be permitted in the pool. In line with government guidelines, people using the pool area and shower must wear footwear of some kind, e.g. flip flops. Each room will be allocated sun loungers and cushions for use throughout their stay. There must be a gap of three metres between the loungers and umbrellas of each group.

In conclusion, we are sorry that the "Casa das Oliveiras" experience will not be the same as it usually is, but we hope you understand that we are taking these measures to keep both you and ourselves as safe as possible.

For eating out, there are many good restaurants and cafés in the towns and villages nearby, in particular Silves and Lagoa. We can tell you where to find succulent chicken piri-piri or a delicious shellfish cataplana. Some of the region’s most beautiful small beaches are on the coast due south of us just eight kilometres away, and there's a beautiful cliff-top walk. There is lovely countryside all around with great potential for many activities, including walking, cycling, horse-riding and bird-watching. Wine lovers will find many wineries in the area that can be visited and whose products can be sampled! For sightseeing, Silves in particular is full of history, with its little streets, imposing castle, cathedral and interesting museums. There is a lively cultural scene in the Algarve with everything from gastronomy and jazz festivals to classical music and a medieval fair.
