Lovely stylish & welcoming house in central Cockermouth, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, & 20 minutes from the sea! Quiet location & free parking, but only 10 mins walk to bars, restaurants & shops. A sunny backyard for summer, a cosy logburner for colder evenings, & a garage for outdoor kit. Lots of books to dip into, & art on the walls. Would make a brilliant retreat or working holiday with an office available for guest use.

Indawo
The house just has that really welcoming feel to it, the way some houses do. And it really pleases me that my guests have reported feeling relaxed, comfortable and at home here too. It's very quiet, peaceful, and light with views of green spaces and the distant fells from the windows, but it's also incredibly conveniently located...Because this is my home, there are some personal effects around the place, but I do clear out significant wardrobe and other storage space for guests, and in fact many of the personal effects are arts and crafts that I've gathered on my travels. I'm a freelance writer and artist, which means that there is a lot of art hung up around the house, and lots of books which you are welcome to dip into (including books, maps, novels and poetry from the local area). I just ask that you leave them here when you leave! The second bedroom can alternatively be configured as an office, making it a wonderful base for a working holiday, writing retreat etc.

In terms of amenities, there is a log fire in the lounge which pumps out heat, as well as gas central heating. It's a very easy house to keep warm. There are smart TVs in both the lounge and the main bedroom, providing access to Netflix, I-player, YouTube and all of the usual terrestrial channels, plus unlimited wifi. I also have a really good DVD collection if you want to go old-school, and a selection of boardgames for those winter evenings. The shower is powerful, and the bath is large, and there are sunny seating areas at the front and back of the house to catch the morning and afternoon rays! Outdoor kit can be stored on shelves in my utility room, or in a private garage just around the corner (just let me know so that I can provide a key. There is a washing machine and tumble drier for guests' use for a small contribution.

Both bedrooms are small, but stylish and cosy (I lock off my own bedroom, so you won't have access to this I'm afraid). The permanent bedroom has a double platform bed (low wooden base with mattress on top), while the second bed is a futon in the office - ie you can either have a dedicated work area, or the room can be converted into a second double bedroom. There is hanging and clothes storage space in both rooms.

The house is within 10 minutes' walk of central Cockermouth, with its range of independent shops, bars and restraurants. There are also walks directly from the doorstep, most notably the walk up the Hay - Cockermouth's main hill, which has incredible views of the Buttermere valley and Skiddaw.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Guests have the run of the whole house, with the exception of my own bedroom, which I'm sure you can understand I like to keep private. In other words, you will have access to the lounge, kitchen, utility area, front and back gardens, two bedrooms (or one bedroom and an office, depending on how you want it conifgured) and the bathroom.

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
I like to think of my space as offering a welcome to people from all backgrounds, identities and places. All are welcome. This said, I'm afraid that the house does have stairs, so it's not fully accessible for those with disabilities, and the bed in the second bedroom is of a low platform kind, which again might not suit those with mobility issues. Children and babies are welcome, but just to note that the house is not specifically designed to be baby-friendly specifically.

Cumbria, England, i-United Kingdom

The house is in a very quiet cul de sac, and many guests have commented on how peaceful it is, and how pleasant and green the views are. The house is just off the road towards Keswick, which is a twenty minute drive away. The coast is also only twenty minutes away, and has superb views across the Solway Firth to Scotland, and a sunset to die for! The nearest beach is Allonby, and slightly further afield, there is a superb coastal cliff walk from St Bees to Whitehaven.

I love the outdoors, and am a keen fellrunner, hillwalker, cyclist, swimmer, and I know the Lake District and wider Cumbria very well, so please feel free to ask for recommendations in advance of your trip (and there are also guidebooks and maps in the house for your referebce). There are also a lovely range of walks and other things to do around Cockermouth itself, and I'm happy to help with ideas for both sunny and rainy day activities! The house is both very central, and also within a few minutes' walk of the start of a walk up the main local hill - the Hay - which has fantastic views of the Lakeland fells. Cockermouth itself is a fantastic small town, with lots of independent shops, cafes, real ale pubs, restaurants...Wordsworth House is in Cockermouth, and provides a fascinating insight into how William and Dorothy Wordsworth grew up, and there are also a number of small art galleries and vintage / antique shops. There is a Sainsburys, a Lidl, an Aldi and a Co-op for supplies, plus lots of independent shops (bakers, butchers, grocers, delis etc). The Kirkgate Arts Centre is thriving, and puts on a mix of theatre, music and films. Yet despite a good amount of tourism, the town also feels very 'lived in', in contrast to Keswick and many of the towns within the actual National Park. In other words, in my own biased view, it's the perfect place to both live and visit! I might not be a Cumbrian by birth, but I'm certainly becoming an adopted one, and Cockermouth provides a fabulous base for my explorations.

I'm a forty something, freelance writer and photographer, who also brings in a bit of extra cash with a painting decorating business. I'm currently doing my Mountain Leader training in order to take guests, and others, out on the fells! I was previously a university lecturer, but increasingly found that I was far too much of a free spirit to be tied to a large institution, so I've swapped it for an alternative lifestyle involving lots of fingers in lots of pies! The mountains are my passion: I completed the Wainwrights age 14, the Munros a couple of years ago, and I compete in fellrunning with Keswick AC. I also love travelling to off the beaten places, with a particular love for bike touring. I've loved renting a room out on Airbnb for the opportunities it provides for meeting new people, from all kinds of different walks of life, and help fund my own travels by renting out the whole house when I'm away. If you're into reading, then you can find out a bit more about my writing here: (Website hidden by Airbnb)

Phakathi nokuhlala kwakho
I rent out the whole house during periods while I'm away with work (otherwise I only rent out a room). For this reason I won't be around during your stay, but two friends who live very nearby look after the place while I'm away, and will be able to help out if you have any problems. I'm also always at the end of a phone, text or email :). Guest access is via a key safe, and you can be assured of your privacy during your stay.
