We are located next to the Cerro Pelon Monarch Butterfly Reserve. Our rooms are spacious & sunny with great views of the mts. Mom's restaurant is right next door. Experience life in bucolic, rural Mexico, just 2.5 hrs from Mex City.

Our bed and breakfast combines comfortable private accommodations in rooms with incredible views with as much homestay experience as you want. All meals are prepared and eaten next door, where there is always something cooking on the wood-burning stove in the heart of the house of a large, multi-generational Mexican family.

When you stay with us you can lounge on our lawn and watch the sunset, go bird watching, ride horses, relax in front of a fire, stroll around the village, hike in the adjoining forest, hunt for mushrooms, catch trout, and learn how to make Mexican food. In short, you'll get to have a firsthand experience of small town life in an ejido in rural Mexico. But the main reason to come see us is because we are located less than 5 minutes from the entrance of the CERRO PELON MONARCH BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY, the end point of these magnificent creatures’ phenomenal yearly migration from Canada to Mexico. Butterfly season is from late November until mid-March.

In the fall the entire North American monarch butterfly population that lives east of the Rockies starts a 2,000 mile journey to a small area of high altitude tropical forests in Mexico's Sierra Madre mountain range. Millions of them return to the same trees in the same forest every year, even though three generations have passed since the last season. Some people cry when they see the butterflies. Others meditate in the forest beneath their trees, sitting so still they end up covered in monarchs. Still others take hundreds of photographs. Whatever you do, you will have a wonderful experience.

Our B&B has ten bedrooms spread over two houses, all with a private bathroom. Some rooms have king-size beds, others have 2 double beds or a double and a single bed. Rooms sleep a maximum of four people. Let us know what bed configuration works best for your party. The common space has a large couch, fireplace, books, games, and tea on offer. Our spacious yard has lawn chairs, flowers, a garden, friendly resident dogs, and stupendous views of the sunset. There is a restaurant and store next door, as well as several other stores in town. The family trout farm is a few blocks away.

My husband Joel and I live in one the houses. We're happy to give information about the area and arrange activities for you (there’s more information about what we offer and prices on our website). We'll follow your lead on how much or how little interaction you want with us.

JM Butterfly BnB is located in an ejido, or a rural peasant community of communally-controlled land created after the Mexican Revolution. There is very little tourist infrastructure in most of the ejidos that had their land taken over by the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. By staying here with us, you spend your pesos in a place that has few other sources of income. Apart from butterfly tourism, illegal logging is one of the few lucrative jobs around. Uncontrolled logging endangers the butterfly habitat. By eating meals, renting horses, hiring guides, shopping in local stores, or buying souvenir baskets, you can make a difference to the people of Macheros, which in turn can help the endangered monarch butterfly migration.

Although we are located in the State of Mexico, our closest city is Zitácuaro in Michoacán. Zitácuaro is 2 hrs from the Observatorio (Poniente) bus terminal in Mexico City, 1 plus hr from Valle de Bravo (which has direct bus service to Macheros at 4:50 pm every day), 2 hrs from Toluca, or 3 hrs from Morelia.

Ukungena kwesivakashi
You'll have access to our two living rooms, the rooftop of our new building, its balconies and porches, any part of our spacious yard, and the restaurant seating area. We do not offer kitchen or refrigerator access.

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
There's no ATM in Macheros and it's a cash only economy. We accept USD and MXN, but you will need pesos for everyone else.

I was finishing up my PhD in cultural anthropology at UCLA when I went to see the monarch butterflies in Mexico, and fell in love--with Mexico, the butterflies, and my guide (now husband), Joel Moreno. Together we've worked to turn his large house in the rural ejido of Macheros into JM Butterfly B&B. This will be our sixth season--see our reviews on tripadvisor for more info on what staying with us is like. Since moving here I've started a garden, learned how to make salsa in a mocajete, and learned a lot about what it's like to live in an extended family with 10 siblings, all of whom live on the same block.
