Misty Vale Hideaway

Upper Lansdowne is ~2hrs from Newcastle & ~25 mins off the freeway, but feels a million miles away with beautiful scenery & seclusion. Enjoy tranquil, epic views of mountains & farmland from a cute cabin overlooking a dam & wake to the sound of birdsong.

The CABIN
Located on our farm 400m from the road, it has an open feel with a cathedral ceiling, large double bed, kitchenette & bathroom. Many guests visit for a digital detox & to enjoy the tranquility of our valley.

Indawo
Guests will find the cabin fully self-contained with linen. towels and breakfast provisions provided. The only things you need to bring are personal items, food and drinks. (Please note there are NO shops or cafes nearby, so bring your provisions with you).

The cabin is on a farm and there are cattle, geese, gates, dams, electric fences etc. Guests are welcome to walk around the large house paddock and access other areas, whilst taking care and remembering to shut gates. The views from the top of the hill behind the cabin (4 mins walk) cover the whole valley and are stunning.

Mar 2021 Floods Update: We were cut off for a few days, but things are now more-or-less back to normal. There is ~1km of dirt road to our front gate that is rougher than usual, but still suitable for ordinary 2WD cars, just take it easy.

We offer breakfast provisions such as muesli, bread, fruit, milk, tea & coffee. Guests should remember that there are no shops or services nearby, so best come prepared with food and drink. Popping out to get a snack will be a 30-60 min round trip.

Upper Lansdowne is a tiny village, but If you're making the trip north or south on the freeway and want to overnight, coming here only adds about 30 mins total to your trip. It's well worth the diversion to see the beautiful, green valley and enjoy the peace and quiet - it's way nicer than a motel room in town.

Coming from the north turn off the freeway at Coopernook and head for Lansdowne. From the south get off the freeway at Cundletown then turn right (north) up Lansdowne Rd at the airport roundabout.

NOTE: Despite Google maps saying it's open, Koppin Yarratt Rd coming from Comboyne to the north is CLOSED and has been for more than 10 years, so you can't get through that way.

The BEDROOM/LIVING SPACE has a large double bed, a sofa/sofabed, folding chairs & table, plus a reverse cycle air-conditioner. The windows have blinds, although you may like to sleep with them open to see the star lit view and sunrise on the hills.

The KITCHENETTE includes a fridge with a small freezer compartment, microwave, kettle, toaster, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils. There is a gas-fired BBQ outside.

The BATHROOM is fitted with a shower, basin and a COMPOSTING toilet.

OUTDOORS there is a deck with a large grassy area in front of it to enjoy the views over our beautiful rural setting. Parking is available next to the cabin. Note: The cabin is on the way to the main farm shed, so there may be a few comings and goings.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
There is no internet service in the cabin and mobile phone service is limited, but you can walk to the house and sit down on the side deck to get a Wi-Fi signal. You can also walk up the slope behind the cabin to get mobile reception.

Upper Lansdowne, New South Wales, i-Australia

Upper Lansdowne sits in an ancient caldera (volcanic crater) and the valley is surrounded by mountains/escarpments on 3 sides, which are the ancient crater walls. It has fabulous views and walks and volcanic plugs are still evident, Mount Olive that is straight in front of the property is a plug and another, Saville's Rock is visible to the north.

The topography means that the valley has its own micro-climate and is usually green and lush. The Misty Vale name comes from the mist that often rolls in overnight, or early in the morning and hangs around until the sun comes up over the escarpment.

My husband Chris and I 'retired' here from Sydney in 2015 - suburbia to 64 acres! We couldn't contemplate retiring and doing nothing, so why not take on a farm? It took 18 months of searching up and down the East Coast to find Misty Vale, which we fell in love with instantly.

The farm is small scale with cattle and plantings of a wide variety of fruit and nut trees. We try to give guests something in season from our orchards and you won't believe the difference between our oranges vs the supermarket's.

For great local views turn left out of our front gate along Koppin Yarratt Rd and walk or drive about 4kms to the turnaround where there are road closed signs. You can go past those and there are beautiful, untouched rainforest gullies to be found as the road climbs out of the valley.

Mar 2021 floods update:
The road has been graded after the floods, so you can drive through the road closed signs at the end of Koppin Yarratt Rd as far as the quarry about 3kms further up. You can park at the quarry and walk uphill.

Previously you could walk all the way to Comboyne and the state forest, but after the floods parts of the road have been washed away after you pass the gate, so take care. It gets muddy and rough, so boots are recommended.
