Indawo
Argiro is a traditional stone house, built in 1875. Theodosopulos, a well-known Greek architect bought it in 1965 and fully restored it. Argiro has
a cozy living- dinning with the fireplace and an equipped kitchen, 2 open plan bedrooms and all its furniture are old handcrafted.
You can get a cold beer, prepare your lunch and watch the sea, at the veranda of ''Argiro''.
Αccess to the upper floor is only from the stone stairs where you can find the terrace with summer kitchen and enjoy the sea view.
''Argiro'' has been set up to a holiday home, but it's rich of traditional elements and authentic items, similar to which are rarely found today.
Our beautiful home lies right in the heart of Mavrikiano, a small settlement, built on the top of a hill, overlooking the Mirabello bay, the seaside village of Elounda and the famous island Spinalonga. Even though this area lies, practically at the edge of Elounda, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Mavrikiano village, manages to keep its character of a typical Cretan village and thus you, our visitor, can wonderfully combine, the simplicity of village life with the cosmopolitan lifestyle of Elounda. The beach lies just 8min walk away.

All rooms are laid out just as they were originally built for a small family, meaning that you must walk trough one space in order to reach the next. Therefore, there are no in-between doors, except for the bathroom, of course.

All furniture is old and handcrafted by local craftsmen. All artistic and cultural details, paintings, sculptures, lights, decorative and everyday-life little items, used by the families and people, who lived here in the past, have been restored and are kept in place.

THE AMAZING HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

The Sfirakis family built the House in 1875; it consisted of a living room, a second section which was the bedroom and behind that, were the stables with sheep and goats.

The family was at odds with the Pasha of the region, due to their resistance in paying the heavy taxes levied. In a clash that resulted in the death of the Turkish tax collector at the hands of the eldest son, the family was forced to flee to the mountains to escape repercussions. The Turks demolished the House and the rest of the relatives fled to Agios Nikolaos and Sitia.

When the Turks departed, the Sfirakis family returned and rebuilt the House using poor materials, which deteriorated quite quickly. The family was then forced to abandon the house in 1920. It then fell apart.

The House was later sold to George Theodosopoulos, a well-known architect. He was a lover of tradition and heritage, who reconstructed it by adding the attic/loft (Master bedroom) and the terrace with outdoor kitchen and BBQ. He also added the kitchen at the entrance of the House, a wooden loft area above the kitchen and the small bathroom.

On completion of these works in 1970, he gave the House to a lady friend who used it as a summer residence for fifteen years. Shortly after the death of the architect, the House was sold to Mrs. Kakaounakis, but she never used it. She bought the property without ever having seen it.

In 1994, she sold it to the present owner. Extensive repairs and preservation works were undertaken to bring the House to its present condition, always with respect to its traditional style and history.
