Lapho uzobe ukhona

Yellow Springs, Ohio, i-United States

The village of Clifton was named for the high rocky bluffs created by melting glaciers 1000s of years ago. Today the remnants of the melting ice is the Little Miami River. This natural channel made the area an ideal location for water-powered mills common to Ohio during the 19th Century.

A post had popped up in the early 1800's and had become a trading center for travel North to South and East to West.

Seeing the opportunities, Bennet Lewis, who had come from Connecticut, settled in the fledgling town. Here, he opened a Mercantile/ General Store across from the Now Historic Clifton Mill and later owned a Textile mill further down the river. Several other Mills dotted the gorge that supplied milled grain, and textiles.

(Our family is a direct descendant from Bennet Lewis)

The village of CLIFTON itself was first laid out in 1833 by Timothy Bates and Bennet Lewis who it surveyed into 32 lots which were laid out "square with the world."

When a new railroad was announced, Lewis assumed it would pass through the Clifton. Plans for Clifton to grow to accommodate the growing population and society folk that it would attract made it necessary for a School House, Opera House and other things that supported a larger town.

Unfortunately, when the railroad was actually constructed some years later, it was located 3 miles west of Clifton and the small town of Yellow Springs.

Without the support of a railroad, a shadow cast over the tiny village that would remain for decades.

In 1854, the small village of Clifton was visited upon by Cholera. They had at least fifteen deaths, perhaps as many as forty.

The hotel (still standing) used water from a street well. A traveler died in the hotel; six more expired in the same building; two persons died across the street; several more died in the neighborhood.
('The Torch-Light' of 13 September 1854, however, claimed that the reports of "depopulation" were greatly exaggerated, that only fifteen deaths occurred during the epidemic.) In any event, the public well collected water from the limestone strata, but it also served as a drain pit for nearby privies, barn yards, kitchen waste, and microscopic bacteria.

Today, the village closely approximates the original size and layout. The population, however, is smaller than in its hay day.

Hi there!
We are Ralph and Kim.

Formerly California residents, we moved to Cambodia to be missionaries in a tribal setting where we raised most of our 6 children. In 2014, we moved back to the US and settled near our kids who were attending Cedarville University.

Kim works full time at Cedarville University and Ralph works for the VA.

We are excited to start hosting/sharing our home with others.
