COVID-19 UPDATE: Airbnb was trialing a feature which allowed hosts to automatically insert a 3 day buffer between guests. That ends July 31st however, in the interest of guest safety, since it is not possible to disinfect the kinds of surfaces in this accommodation (e.g., wood, fabric, stone) I am continuing to manage my calendar to ensure a minimum 3 days between guest occupancies. There are two Airbnb listings on this property (Peaceful Cabin and Yurt Camping); when one gets booked, I block off the other during those dates so you can be assured you will have exclusive use of the property, its features & amenities.
----------
"Rustic, charming, romantic, comfy, cozy," are some of the descriptors guests use to describe the cabin. It is super-private, self-contained with its own amenities, down a forest path about 100m west of the host’s house. (A cart is available to move your gear.)

CABIN AMBIANCE: The cabin was crafted using the cordwood masonry technique by Rob Roy, iconic proprietor of the Earthwood Building School of West Chazy, NY. It features a living roof, massive posts and beams from local Amish mills, a flagstone floor made from Wiarton quarry stone, and cordwood walls built from trees felled on the property. This quaint structure nestles itself organically into the forest which surrounds it and offers exceptional privacy and peace… all the charm and nature connection of camping, but waaaay more comfortable & convenient!

CABIN AMENITIES: The cabin does not have running water but alternate conveniences are at hand. The privy opposite the cabin is serviced by a modern flush-action portable toilet. There is a Victorian washstand & basin in the cabin and a butane stove to heat water. (If you’re wondering how to use a washstand to stay clean, it’s easy, they did it that way for years! You’ll find printed instructions.)

Drinking water is provided in glass jugs, water for washing in plastic containers. All water is pure & fresh from a modern, sealed well drilled 300' down into the bedrock. The cabin has on-site electrical power for lighting and small items like notebook computers and device chargers. While cooking is not permitted inside, the woodstove or butane stove may be used to reheat previously prepared foods, or you can cook outside with your own equipment.

CABIN COMFORT: The cabin is heated by woodstove and a plentiful supply of wood. In summer, the stone floor keeps it cool on all but the hottest of days. A hardwood futon frame and upgraded eight-layer mattress provide comfortable seating and sleeping for one or two people. (In case you are concerned about such things, but too polite to ask, the mattress has a breathable micro-pore inner cover which locks out moisture, bed bugs, etc.).

This property is completely off-grid, with no power line connection to the “outside world”. Electricity is generated on-site from solar energy and some very clever modern electronics. The core and soul of the homestead is a circa-1850 local pioneer log home, which is complimented with additions, modern septic system & deep drilled well, to offer modern conveniences while still retaining its rustic charm. If you’re interested in how home-based renewable energy works, ask the host for walk-thru of the system!

Ukungena kwesivakashi
In addition to your accommodation, part of the value in your stay is exclusive use of 50 acres of private woodlands with 4km of marked trails looping through varied types of forest, each with its own character: mystical cedars, feathery larches, towering red pines, fragrant spruces, sugar maple hardwood bush, and white pines that whisper to you in the breeze. There are also special features like a magical SoundForest of suspended wind chimes and a meditative walking labyrinth winding its way through the trees, and on a clear night be treated to a stargazing extravaganza!

Guests also have access to the following amenities near the main house:
+ book time to use the wood-fired sauna
+ use the refreshing outdoor shower anytime (ambient temp, not heated)
+ use the campfire pit or fireplace at labyrinth

There are two Airbnb listings on this property, but we only book guests into either ONE for any given dates. However, the SAME guest group may book both listings concurrently for a total occupancy of up to 7 people. (View other listing http://airbnb.ca/h/yurt-camping )

Ezinye izinto okumele ziqashelwe
BREAKFAST ($20 single, $30 couple) - Start a wonderful and relaxed day with brekkie-in-a-basket brought to the cabin at a time of your choosing. Breakfast is wholesome and homemade and always includes organic home baking and as much locally-sourced product as possible. Plus, of course, great (locally-roasted) coffee or tea. Request in advance to ensure availability, or on short-notice on an “as available” basis. Most special dietary needs can be accommodated if requested at least 10 days ahead.

INTERNET – There is no WiFi reception at the cabin. There is phone reception, though the strength varies depending on the device and your carrier. Satellite internet is available at/near the house ($) but consider treating yourself to a few days of digital detox :-) during your stay at Off Grid Retreat.

COUNTRY LIVING: Being situated in a rural area, at certain times of year you may occasionally hear (or, ah, smell) agricultural activities in the neighbouring vicinity. Similarly, the trade-off for living surrounded by the good vibes and plentiful oxygen from tens of thousands of trees is inconveniences like insects… welcome to country life! I generally know the times of year these are most impactful but nothing can be guaranteed. If it is a concern, please inquire before booking.

I used to have a conventional house (and conventional life!) in the GTA suburbs. Now I live off-grid and solar-powered, in the country surrounded by 50 acres of woodland habitat and 50,000 trees :-) I spent 25+ years working as a counsellor, helping people find their life & career direction, but now retired I seem to draw more upon an eclectic collection of qualifications including Yoga Teacher, Labyrinth Faciliator, Master Naturalist... and certified Chainsaw Operator! I enjoy meeting the kinds of interesting people who come to stay at this unique place & space, but we are also sensitive to balance being welcoming & helpful with allowing people the privacy, space & peace they may be seeking.

It's all about peace, nature, and privacy here, and you are welcome to engage in those however you wish. I enjoy chatting with guests, but if what you want to do is seclude yourself and do your own thing that is totally fine too. It’s your time and space to make whatever kind of experience you like. As host & property owner, I am around most of the time if you require assistance or have questions about anything on- or off-property. I have broad knowledge of the local area, from the Beaver Valley all the way up to Tobermory and down to Kincardine, and always happy to recommend routes, suggest activities, eating places, and so on. I have a particular interest in off-the-beaten-track places, and less-touristy experiences, without hordes of people.
