Magical tropical escape and working coffee farm. Our farm produces delicious Kona coffee while also being a bio-plantation (botanical garden) that grows rare tropical plants and provides a home for local birds and wildlife.

Indawo
Property:
Magical tropical escape and working coffee farm. Our farm produces delicious Kona coffee while also being a bio-plantation (botanical garden) that grows rare tropical plants and provides a home for local birds and wildlife.

Three acres are devoted to the coffee trees, while the remaining acreage is landscaped primarily in rare and endangered tropical plants with the hope of encouraging their use in landscaping and thus saving the species. There are even a new species of avocado that was discovered on the property. These avocados are named Sallee avocados after Derek's mother.

Two acres of the property is landscaped in a wild tropical feel. Meander around the property (careful, this is not an uber-manicured sterile hotel so there are slippy spots and bugs) as you explore and discover the many exotic tropical plants. Help yourself to any seasonal tropical fruit growing on the property (bananas, mango, lychees, avocado, lilikoi, papaya, etc!).

Farm residents include wild turkeys, pheasants, chickens, frogs, roosters, the odd stray cat, and many small songbirds. You might see toads, geckos, mongoose, and chameleons as well. There is one rooster in particular that has moved in and who thinks it's always morning!

Farm manager lives next door, and can give you a tour of the property and can tell you about coffee farming if you'd like.

While you'll be the only guests on the property, this is a working farm, so there could be workers coming and going and work being done.

Hot Tub:
Relax in the infinity-edged hot tub looking over breathtaking views over downtown Kona and Ocean. The hot tub is located at the top of the property. Please note that because the hot tub is huge, it is not constantly heated. You will need to turn it on to heat and the heat turns off automatically after three hours.

Location:
Our farm is settled near the small artist village of Holualoa. The town offers art galleries, spas (massage and yoga), and restaurants. There are wonderful art stores and quaint shops (less touristy than downtown Kona). There is even a shop that sells Ukeleles! Dine at Holukoa Cafe - one of our all-time favorite restaurants that locally source their food. If you feel like some more shopping and action, downtown Kona is also a short drive away (about a 15-minute drive). Our property is off the Mamalahoa hwy.

House:
The home is clean, airy, relaxing, cute, and inviting (but not formal or fancy!). Home is on the lower part of the property (you can hear cars). Hot tub and pavilion area on the upper part of the property.

The Master bedroom has a king-size "green" Keeta mattress (super comfy!) and the master bathroom has a combo shower/tub. The master bedroom is large, airy, and bright. Most of the windows in the master bedroom do not have shades (so if you require complete darkness to sleep, this is not the place for you). The master bedroom is on the second floor.

The second sleeping in the loft area and offers a full-size futon. Please note that the loft is open and does not provide privacy.

In addition to two indoor bathrooms and showers, there is an outdoor shower attached to the main house as well.

The temperature is usually a consistent 74F during the day. Afternoon showers are typical from 2 to 4 pm. Evenings can get chilly (usually around 55F). These temperatures are pretty consistent throughout the year. The rainy season is from June to September (clear in the morning, rains in the afternoon, clear sunset). The dry season is from October to May. The dry season is when you may get a winter storm, but it's usually clear. Welcome to the tropics where there are no weather guarantees!

Ukungena kwesivakashi
Guests have access to entire property, but wander at their own risk. Guests have access to laundry area in garage, but we only ask that they stay out of the remaining garage working area.

THINGS OF NOTE AND ANSWERS TO FREQUENT CONCERNS AND QUESTIONS:

1. The farm is in Holualoa (not on the beach) which is an approximately 15-minute drive up the mountain from downtown Kona. We are not near the beach. We are near the small artist town of Holualoa.

2. Temperatures are cooler than in Kona and it can get chilly in the evenings.

3. It is not financially feasible for us to keep the hot tub heated at all times (it is VERY large). It is set to turn off automatically and will need to be turned back on for heat. I usually turn it on before I leave so that it takes less time to heat up.

4. This is a farm, not a sterile hotel. This is not a place for anyone wanting the hotel experience.

5. We have a strict cancellation policy.

6. There is no TV.

7. Guests will have access to the house, the infinity hot tub, and are welcome to wander around the property, but ask that they stay to the smoothly paved areas. Also, while it will feel like you have the entire 5 acres all to yourself, it is a working farm, so go naked at your own risk! Workers do come on the property.

8. You will need to rent a car! You will want to be able to drive to go shopping and out and about. While the property is close enough to Holualoa, but it's a very small artist town. The big island has diverse and beautiful climates and fauna. We encourage you to explore.

9. The property is on the Mamalahoa highway. On most of the property you only hear nature, on the lower party (where the house is) you can hear cars.

10. While we love and welcome children, the property could be dangerous for wee ones. There are stairs in the house and a hot tub up above. Also, we do not have any children-specific bedding or beds. For their own safety, if children do accompany you we require that they are supervised at all times.

11. This is not a property to stay at if you are a light sleeper! Nature can be both charming and noisy. Coqui frogs and one particular deranged wild rooster (who crows a lot) have made themselves at home.

12. There are bugs on the property, so if spiders completely freak you out, I would recommend walking on the pathways with a stick to help clear the way (spider sticks are provided in the garage). The spiders are little crab spiders and they like to drape their webs across the pathways. They are harmless, beautiful, and I think quite adorable. Gorgeous colors!

13. We do have the house sprayed for insects but try to keep chemicals to a minimum and this is the tropics. The ants do love a snack. So if you leave food out, they will come to visit.
