Indawo
The Painted Pony is a 750-acre high desert estate in Hidalgo County of southern New Mexico just up the road from Rodeo, NM. This unique and isolated part of the country known as the boot heel of New Mexico. We are remote but with high speed 300 Mbps internet access.

Painted Pony provides the luxurious accommodations that you would expect from an Estate built by a former High Tech Entrepreneur as his personal get-away from Tucson, AZ.

We rent the entire Estate (that includes all three buildings) to one party at a time for family reunions, vacations or other groups and events. Come stay with us and have the entire estate for your private getaway.

The Compound is situated in the San Simon Valley of SW New Mexico with breath taking panoramic views of two mountain ranges boarding the property, the Chiricahuas and Peloncillo Mountains.

Fly into either El Paso, TX or Tucson, AZ. From these airports we are about a two and a half hour drive. Guests from LA, San Diego, AZ, CO, NM,Texas, and OK usually drive over. People come to our location because we are economical and off the beaten path. The perfect high desert retreat.

In these times of concern over Covid-19, our set up lends itself to keeping social distanced. You bring all your own food and other provisioning. We use contactless check-in. You can have people pre-tested for Covid, if that is your preference, as some of our guests have done. We don’t have specific Covid requirements beyond what is in effect for the state of NM during your visit.

State land borders the north and west sides of the property and federal lands cover the mountains both east and west, creating open spaces with quiet solitude and no close by neighbors. Our Guests are impressed with the quiet, peaceful setting and the natural beauty of our night sky. Our skies are clear and dark enough for you to explore the many fascinating jewels of the night without a telescope. Bring a basic telescope and you will be able to explore the sky in an area astronomers have chosen to live.

The Estate provides you and your guests with space to enjoy privacy while also having large areas for mingling and getting together for dinners or other gatherings. The compound consists of Main House, Two Guests Houses, an Airplane Hanger (used for group events), Heated 20'x40' Swimming Pool - Walled with childproof entrance gate, Two Hot Tubs, Outdoor Fireplace and Five RV Pads. All facilities are in one location. The Main Hot Tub is a new, large, 450 gallon tub. The pool is heated mostly with environmentally friendly solar heat backed up by two conventional heaters.

Rodeo, New Mexico, i-United States

Painted Pony Resort is situated in the heart of the San Simon Valley near Rodeo, NM. Rodeo, NM is nestled in between the Chiricahua and the Pelencillo mountains and has been a boom town more than once thanks to cattle, minerals, and the railroads. The weather has four gentle seasons and the area experiences over 300 sunny days per year. The region is rich in history from the early inhabitants around 1000AD called the Mimbre Indians to the travels of Coronado expeditions 500 years later on the way to the Colorado to the wild west cowboys of the late 1800's including the Earps, Curly Bill Brocious, Billy the kid, and the Clanton Gang. Plan a visit to the near by historical site where Apache leader Geronimo surrender in 1886.

The Chiricahua Mountains are considered a hikers and birders paradise and offers an amazingly diverse range of micro-climates from the desert at the valley floor to an alpine climate as you climb through the range. The lower elevation Peloncillo Mountains are home to a plethora of desert wildlife and foliage and have some spectacular areas to hike and explore. In the town of Rodeo, NM you'll find a few nicely appointed B&B's, a general store, and the Rodeo Tavern where you can get a cowboy-size meal and a great steak.

The Chiricahua Desert Museum, located just down the road, features a rare collection of artifact from the Mimbres, Casas Grande and the Apache tribes which resided in the Chiricahua and the Peloncillo Mountains surrounding us.  Their exhibits include examples of tools used by the indigenous Native American tribes in our area, such as: matates, axes, arrow heads, arrows, bows, sandals, and a beautiful collection of pottery. Their living exhibit consists of species native to the North American Southwest and Sky Islands, offering a rare view of over thirty-four species of rattlesnakes. A must see museum featuring world class displays!

Being primarily a ranching area the locals are family oriented. They welcome newcomers and are always happy to see a new face. Don't be surprised if you get invited to a roping or out to gather cattle if you express even the slightest interest. The astronomy community is strong with many astronomers residing in nearby Portal, AZ at the Arizona Sky Village. You'll find people in the area who are extremely eager to share their passion for astronomy with you. The San Simon Valley and Rodeo, NM the perfect southwestern vacation spot.
