It is nowadays a mix of different architectural styles, predominantly Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque and is classified as a National Monument since 1910

Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) used to be the location of the royal palace, until it was destroyed in 1755 by the Great Earthquake. The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belem, and the new arcaded buildings became the entry port of the city. Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz. The centre of the square boasts the statue of King José I, which is 14 meters high
