Patat is a typically Dutch snack. In English they are called French Fries. Call them how you want but we, the Dutch, love them thick and with a lot of mayonaise. We prefer so much mayonaise that the patat is going to drown in it :-). One of the best places you can take them is Frytes uit Zuyd / Par Hasard. I suggest you to take this for lunch or just a snack.

Weesp - A less touristy and more Dutch town in the neighborhood
This town is my hometown. It is very closeby to Amsterdam and it looks like Amsterdam except for the fact that everything is smaller. Weesp is 125 years older then Amsterdam by the way :-).
You can go to Weesp by train. The best way to go to Weesp is via Amsterdam Muiderpoort Station (30 minute walk from my apartment). From this station it is only 10 minutes to Weesp by train. Amsterdam Muiderpoort Station lies in the East of Amsterdam. So it makes a good combination visiting the East in the afternoon / evening. It is possible to travel via Amsterdam Amstel Station as well. Switch trains at Duivendrecht.
The left windmill you see in this picture is still in use! They deliver flour to several bakery's in the area. The windmill is located in my hometown Weesp. The windmilll is open on Saturdays from 10.00-16.00. You really want to see you cute shop inside where you can buy flour and typical Dutch snacks. It is a 15 minute walk from the station in Weesp to this windmill.
Ask for Wouter...he is the leading man and say I send you :-). He knows everything about windmills, still wear wooden shoes and willing to tell you everything about his work as a miller.
Weesp is worth visiting if you want to have a look at a village which is less touristy and more Dutch. You can find nice shops, a delicious ice scream shop (won prices in Italy), nice cafe's and restaurants and of course this windmill.

Amsterdam has a defense line. We call it ‘Stelling van Amsterdam’. This line is a 135 km long circular defense at 15-20 km around the capital Amsterdam which was constructed by the Ministry of War mostly between about 1881 and 1914. In Weesp you can find one of the forts of this defense line. The fort is still in tact and this days used for music lessons and creative workshops. If you are lucky the door is open and you can have a look inside.
