V shaped Valley carved during the Ice Age , with magnificant mountains rising dramatically on either side of this rugged landscape. Just 2 miles from our home, we recommend walking in this stunning "Gap" through majestic mountains and small lakes, . It is about 6 miles or 10 kilometres from Kate Kearneys Cottage, at the beginning of the trail, to the Top of the Gap but even a short half hour walk to the first bridge is a magical experience. Riding on a horse or a "pony and trap" is also an old tradition for tourists to this beautiful "Gap", dating back to the early 1900's.

You can take a short boat ride from Ross Castle to this Enchanted and Peaceful Haven, where sika deer wander undisturbed. It is the largest island in Loch Leane which means "Lake of Learning", . Walk in the path of history through its monastic ruins which was one of the great seats of Learning in Europe. Among those who studied here was Brian Boru, High King of ireland and many esteemed leaders from Europe. The best record of Irish history spanning 433 to 1450 "Annals of Innisfallen" is believed to have been recorded here by the Monks. It is now housed in Oxford.
