Located in the Samegrelo region of Georgia, Martvili Canyon takes about an hour and twenty minutes to reach. It’s one of the most beautiful nature spots to visit. You can walk round the gorgeous scenery and the emerald-green river, Abasha. Take a boat ride and visit waterfalls. A .4 mile-long (700 m) stone-paved trail starts from the visitor center and continues along the Dadiani historical pathway. The area has two bridges, three viewpoints, and a 30-step stair created by large limestone boulders. The main highlight of the Martvili Canyon is boating to the waterfalls. Inflatable boats, life jackets and helmets at the pier hint at white water rafting, but boating the canyon is a pleasant, easy trip, and the equipment is just a safety precaution. The length of the route the boats take along the river is about 1 km, and the trip takes about 30 minutes (including photo stops). Children under 5 years old are not allowed on the boats. After a tranquil journey through the picturesque canyon, you’ll be excited to see a group of beautiful waterfalls and hear the dramatic sound they make. Around the waterfalls are several walkways, bridges, and observation platforms that allow you to take excellent photographs.

Prometheus Cave has twenty-two caverns of various sizes within it, six of which are open to tourists: The Cavern of the Argonauts, Kolkhetian Cavern, Medea’s Cavern, The Cavern of Love, Prometheus’ Cavern, and the Iberian Cavern. The walking path through the caves is just under 1.5 kilometres in length, with a boat section measuring 380 metres. The boat journey is especially thrilling, as it is accompanied by atmospheric music, and the route is illuminated by mysterious lights. It feels like crossing the mythological river Styx. The caves are home to nineteen species of aquatic plants and up to forty species of insects, invertebrates, and molluscs. Skull fragments and fossils of a cave bear, starfish, molluscs, and other animals from the Cretaceous Period have been found within the cave.

Kinchka represents a cascade of three waterfalls, and is located at an elevation of 843 meters above the sea level, on limestone Askhi Massif of karst origin. Two waterfalls, 20-meter and 70-meter-high, are created by the flow of the tributary of river Satsiskvilo over chalk stone slopes. Third one is created after the tributary river joins river Satsiskvilo and is about 35-meters-high. Under the organization of the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia, Kinchkha Waterfall can be reached by a 2,1-km-long marked trail from village Kinchkha. The trip to Kinchkha waterfall could be combined with the trip to Okatse canyon (they both are located close by).

Sataplia Cave Park features foreboding massive dinosaur footprints amidst botanical seclusion. The karst caves are equipped with backlight and acoustic system that will add up to your impressions from Sataplia brightness and make it lifelike. The central point of the touristic part of the labyrinth is a “Stone heart”. A huge heart shape stalagmite attracts romanticists, who make a wish near the “sculpture”. Next to the “Stone heart” is a hall for patients suffering from bronchial asthma. The permanent temperature in the caves is approximately 14 degrees Celcius and cave has a healing air. You can find an observation deck at the highest point of the Sataplia reserve, built on the rock in the form of a horseshoe with a transparent floor which will make you feel as if you are hovering over the abyss. It opens up a breathtaking view of the surroundings of Kutaisi. If you fancy hiking in enchanted forests with a very few people around, I would suggest wondering into the Sataplia forest. There are plenty of hiking possibilities, also an observation point (with no tourists around). Make sure you pack lunch with you and have some water, as there are no cafeteria in sight. I usually plan for 3-5 hrs on wandering about tourist routes and straying away into the wild. If you are interested, ask me for more tips…

Kutaisi and its surrounding vicinities offer several attractions. If you want to make the most of your stay in Kutaisi, don’t miss these natural and architectural highlights: Bagrati Cathedral, considered by many to be one of Georgia's most impressive and significant examples of cultural heritage and medieval architecture. Motsameta Monastery, located along the banks of the Rioni River just 6 kilometers from Kutaisi. Steeped in history, it’s tucked away in pristine foliage during the warmer months. Gelati Monastery, a grand cathedral with a surrounding complex which used to house the renowned Gelati Academy. It is also the burial site of revered King David Agmashenabeli, also known as “David the Builder”. The monastery is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Long ago, the village of Nokalakevi was the political centre of the Kingdom of Colchis, with the capital city of Lazica standing here in antiquity and the pre-Christian period. These days, the village has become a museum-reserve in which visitors can take a walk through ancient history. In addition, the views of the Anasha river are spectacular….. You can combine your trip to the Nokalakevi museum with the nearby sulphur hot springs and also rafting on the Abasha river

Kvamli rocky massif in Lechkhumi stretches out to the south for 300 meters and offers breathtaking views to the visitors. On the elevation of 1,700 meters in the massif, there is a ‘frozen overpass’ where ice lollies are made even in the summer heatwave. Legend has it that Georgian mythological hero Amirani is chained in one of the Khamly pits. Scientists also believe that this massif hides several caves that Georgian kings used to protect the country’s treasures during the hostilities. However, until today not a single expedition has discovered them.

This natural limestone monolith is situated in Katskhi village, an hour drive from Kutaisi, near Chiatura. The height of the pillar is about 131 ft (40 m) and it overlooks a small valley where the Katskhura river flows. A prominent rock, together with visible church ruins on its top, has been worshiped by locals as the Pillar of Life and is considered a figure of the True Cross. Until 1944, the pillar was unclaimed and unsurveyed by researchers. That changed from 1999 to 2009 when it was regularly studied. Findings revealed that the ruins were of an early medieval monastery from the ninth or tenth century. Today, you can view a new monastery (build in 2009).

Please remind me to share with you a separate guidebook on Tskhaltubo. Tskaltubo, a small Georgian town 9 kilometres from Kutaisi was one of the most popular spa resorts of the USSR, attracting more than 100 000 visitors a year. Today, most sanatoriums are abandoned, though at some renovations are taking place. And there is a sign of revival as more snd more tourists come to enjoy the healing properties of the radon-carbonated waters of Tskaltubo. The town has become one of the most popular destinations for urban explorers in Georgia. You should definitely enjoy the spa treatments (recommend going to the spring number 6), as well as enjoy the tranquillity and lush nature of the central park!

At night time with the right lighting, the Sairme Pillars resemble magical towers floating in the clouds. This sight formed as a result of natural processes over the millennia and can also be seen from the main road going from Racha to Lechkhhumi regions. Gomismta is known as the kingdom of the clouds and the fog, which is caused by the humid climate. The tourists and holiday makers usually visit this mountain for this reason. They walk to the peak of the mountain, from where picturesque views are opened in front of their eyes, sometimes it is “the sun setting in the waves of the clouds”, sometime- “sun rising from the mist”. Such beauty can’t be expressed neither by camera, nor- by words. So, you should see that masterpiece of nature with your own eyes. Gomismta is a mountainous summer resort in Guria, where sea and mountain weather merges together, and has natural curing effect. It is 2100-2755 meters from the sea level. IMPORTANT: I would recommend going to Gomismta only on a 4x4 / a good quality jeep as the road there is not paved. Also, do check the weather to ensure that it will have sun (clouds will be there in the morning over the Adjara region) do leave home at least 2.5-3 hrs before the sunrise to enjoy the sunrise….

One of the most things for which the village is famous is the Lailashi Bible. This unique, X century Jewish artefact is now stored at the National Center of Manuscripts of Georgia in Tbilisi. Lailashi church servants also created unique gospels, which are now stored in the Tbilisi State Museum. Bronze axes from the XIV-XIII century BC, which were also discovered in Lailashi, are now stored the the Saint Petersburg Hermitage museum. At the Lailashi cemetery you can find a single-nave, aisleless church and belltower, which was built at the beginning of XIX century on the site of an older church that is now destroyed. In line with its multi-ethnic heritage, the village also has an Armenian church, which is severely damaged, as well as a Jewish synagogue nearby Lailashi Bazaar. You can also relax in “Okronishi Water,” a pool built by Jewish people which is still in operation. From there, you can enjoy the views of Lajanuri valley and the Lajanuri Water Reservoir.

You can combine the trip to the Shaori Reservoir with a trip to Tskhrajvari (the mountain of 9 Crosses (in separate attraction post) or a visit to Ambrolauri - capital of the Racha region. Shaori Reservoir is one of the most attractive places in Racha. Heading to Racha, you cannot overpass the Reservoir which dazzles you with its landscape. Shaori Reservoir is not a very popular tourist destination; however, on the plus side, it makes the place more interesting. People who love to wander frequently search for places which are not overcrowded with visitors and tourists and, at the same time, where they can spend a pleasant weekend in nature. Ambrolauri is knows for Khvanchkara wine, mostly. This is a semi-sweet wine with a base of Alexandrouli grape variety. There are also many medieval fortresses and churches around the city, including Barakoni Church, Minda Fortress, Zemo Krikhi Church and others, but the most spectacular of them is Nikortsminda, which was built at the beginning of the 11th century. This church is one of the best examples of Georgian national architecture, and its ornamentation is a true masterpiece of monumental sculpture.

At 1950 meters above sea level, Bakhmaro Resort is even higher in altitude than the famous Swiss resorts of St. Moritz (1855m), Arosa (1800m), Davos (1560m), and Leysin (1263m). While Bakhmaro is a mountain resort in the Meskheti Range, you can breathe the sea air here, with the Black Sea only fifty kilometers to the west. This combination of sea and mountain air is not only good for your lungs, but it also strengthens the immune system. Local legend says that if you spend twenty one summer day in Bakhmaro, you won’t be sick for an entire year. Summer in Bakhmaro is breathtaking, with alpine meadows, forests of spruce and fir, and the colourful, hand-painted wooden houses scattered throughout the mist and greenery. Whether you prefer an active or relaxing vacation, Bakhmaro has something for you, with hiking being the main activity in the region. While visiting, you should sample some of Bakhmaro’s kaymaghi, a popular Adjarian dish made using sour cream. It’s perfect on a hot day. Summer starts in June in Bakhmaro. In this season the weather is dry, with an average temperature of 12.5°C, so even in the summer you’ll still need warm clothing. It takes about 2.5-3 hrs to get to Bakhmaro from Tskaltubo, and you would need a 4x4 vehicle to get there.

Known for its extensive network of Soviet-era cable cars, Chiatura is a favourite destination in Georgia for urbexers and photographers. But for the past three years, the Chiatura cable cars have been closed. Now, ‘Air Venice’ (as one person recently described it to me) finally has her wings back. In September 2021, a brand new set of French-built ropeways opened in Chiatura, replacing some of the old lines. While it’s true that Chiatura will never be exactly the same again, it’s wonderful to see this new infrastructure making life a lot easier (and safer) for the people who rely on the cable cars to get around. Chiatura is absolutely worth including on your Georgia itinerary, especially if you’re interested in Soviet history and architecture.

A blast from the Soviet past, Tskaltubo is a wonderland for urbexers, architecture aficionados and photographers alike. The town is dripping with history and has a very unusual vibe. Did you know that Jim Carrey bought an NFT film shot in Tskaltubo? This is the first NFT purchase for the actor from Ryan Koopmans and Alice Wexel's series The Wild Within. Yes, the place is very unusual, and it might have a feel of a ghost town, specifically in the winter time. But also Tskhaltubo has its charm - you will never forget the place, it will fill your body up with the energy of the radon springs, fill your mind with the serenity of the park, feed your lungs with air so thick with oxygen, that you might start feeling lightheaded. And you will eventually fall in love with this strange little town. You will think about it often and dream of coming back. And you will come back to this strange and tranquil town. Just like I did, and most of my friends.
