This is the genuine Marbella - from before glitz and glamour took over. Park your car either in a parking garage (not expensive) or on a street below the main street artery, and stroll through the pedestrian zone of Old Town Marbella. Good meals are offered everywhere. Or just soak in the atmosphere.

A trip to Marbella is not complete without a visit to Puerto Banus (15-20 mins way from the villa by car). This is where haute couture (Hermes, Dior, Balenciaga, etc.) has established its stores. This is where the megayachts lie at bay. Among the younger crowd, this is where the main party scene is.
Despite the above, Puerto Banus does not need to be expensive. Grab a pizza at Cafe Picasso (Port front), which has been there for as long as I can remember and is always full of people. Have a drink at any of the watering holes port side.
And if the family wants to go shopping, try to direct them to the El Corte Ingles magazine.

La Concha is the mountain top overlooking Marbella and Puerto Banus. It lies at the end of a good 3-hour trek along the montain ridge called Sierra Nieve. You do not need hiking boots, but you do need good trainers. The trek is a bit "airy" at times, but in these places you have chains to secure your grip. Mild vertigo is "fine"; severe is not.
Juanar is a good starting point. Take the A-7 eastwards and exit at La Canada towards Ojen. The Juanar exit is just across the mountain ridge; a 20 min drive from the house. From Juanar you reach La Concha (5-hour walk), Cruz de Juanar (1 ½ hour walk) and a number of other mountain tops with spectacular views of the Mediterranean and – on clear days – the Atlas mountains in Africa. NB! Bring enough water - and ideally a bit of food. There is a restaurant where you park the car, but nothing else along the route.

Nikki Beach is possibly the hottest among a string of hot beach clubs cum restaurants in and around Marbella. My children would not be seen dead there with me (neither would my wife, most probably). In high season, you had better make a reservation.

My friends brag about their food. I do not. But it has a terrific ambience, built and themed like an African hunting lodge.
Trocadero Arena offers sun beds, a great lounge area for drinks and - for a beach restaurant - slightly (bot only slightly) more formal dining. The beach is unfortunately somewhat more rocky than the best ones in Marbella.

One of my favourite chringuitos (beach restaurants) in Marbella. Unpretentious. Offers steady home cooking at very decent prices. Their freshly grilled fish of the day is a local favourite. South and west facing, it is a good place to enjoy sunset. We recommend their sangria as a sunset companion.

La Plaza at Puente Romano offers fine dining. Nobu (Asian), Dani Garcia (French/international; Michelin starred), Sea Grill (seafood), Serafina (Italian), Thai Gallery, Pizza Romano, Bibo (tapas), El Chriniguito (seafood, grill) and Monkey Bar are all located here. And in-between them all is the outside covered area La Plaza, where you can just enjoy a drink.
Puente Romano is expensive, but almost a "must" to first time visitors to Marbella.

Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg acquired the estate Finca Santa Margarita and transformed in into the Marbella Club, an international resort aimed at movie stars, business executives and the nobility. It would be frequented by members of European aristocratic families with famous names: Bismarck, Rothschild, Thurn und Taxis, Metternich, de Mora y Aragon, de Salamanca or Thyssen-Bornemisza, thereby transforming Marbella into a destination for the international jet set. Trading on Prince Alfonso's kinship to the royal courts of Europe, the hotel quickly proved to be popular with vacationing members of Europe's social elites for its casual but discreet luxury. Jaime de Mora y Aragón, a Spanish bon vivant and brother to Fabiola, Queen of the Belgians, as well as Adnan Khashoggi and Guenter Rottman, were frequent visitors.
