A rental car is advised, but there are other options.

Casa Norinha is in the countryside, so a car is recommended, however the village of Paderne is a pleasant walk (around 2km) and from there you can get buses to connect to the whole public transport system. Taxis are also a possibility - we can provide numbers of local cab firms. We can also provide bikes for your stay for a small rental fee.

A little Portuguese goes a long way.

English is widely-spoken in the Algarve, even in the rural areas like Paderne. However, using a little Portuguese always goes down well in shops and restaurants. We have provided a couple of phrase books in the guest suite to help you along.

The best produce can be bought locally.

The Algarve produces wonderful fruit, vegetables, honey, meat and fish. The grocery shop opposite the church in Paderne has been run by the same woman for over 50 years, and always has lots of fresh, local produce (including wonderful bread). There’s a farmer’s market in the village on the first Saturday of the month, or markets every day in Lagos and Albufeira. You’ll also spot roadside stalls run by local growers.
