This a slightly larger village with a lot to explore. The village itself is quite small, but has shops, bars, a swimming pool in summer and a castle. Maella is best explored on foot, since many of the roads were built for donkeys rather than cars. Maella has a variety of shops as well as a number of bars and restaurants.

Alcañiz is a larger town with bigger supermarkets and a wider range of shops. It was bombed by Italian planes in April 1938 and more than 3,000 people were killed. The townspeople hid in cellars near the Tourist Office which can be visited. The Cathederal and the Parador, which was once the castle are well worth a visit.

Get involved with local Fiestas

Fiestas happen in Spain at many times of the year. Being in a small village, it is easy to get involved and see these traditions up close. Semana Santa (Holy Week) has the tradition of drumming at various points in the week, especially on Good Friday. Most villages mark these days in some way, but the best places to see this are Calanda and Alcaniz. Take ear plugs though! It gets noisy. In August and September, each village will hold it´s own Fiesta Major to celebrate the patron Saints of the vilage, so dates will vary. In Mazaleon, it is held on what is usually August Bank Holiday.
