The hills are distinguished by varied stripes of red, tan, orange, white and black. The Painted Hills Unit also contains a diverse assemblage of leaf fossils aging 39-30 million years old called the Bridge Creek Flora, and a small outcropping of rock containing animal fossils from 30-27 million years ago.
Five walking/hiking trails available ranging in length from 0.25 miles to 1.3 miles and has a shaded picnic area. The yellows, golds, blacks, and reds of the Painted Hills are beautiful at all times of the day, but are best lit for photography in the late afternoon.

Scenic Drive. Just south of Prineville it is a beautiful winding drive with breathtaking views. It is peaceful and beautiful. Weddings groups of no more than 50 people can reserve the North Point Amphitheater space by calling the park office. For other events please contact the Park Manager or Park Ranger to see if you will need a permit.
