Emilie's in Glenbeigh (village ca. 10km south-west of The Lodge on the Ring of Kerry) is a pizzeria and deli. It's a little pricier than the typical franchise pizza but excellent and worth it. They do sit-down (recommend to book especially in high season) and take-away but not as far as we are aware delivery. https://www.emilies.ie/ https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Restaurant_Review-g211916-d17623456-Reviews-Emilie_s-Glenbeigh_County_Kerry.html https://www.facebook.com/emiliesglenbeigh/

Nearest restaurant (Jack's) is only 1km from The Lodge. Jack's is a high-end type restaurant. Nice for a treat. The bar at Jacks is where I would drop in for a drink when the kids are off to bed. The Boathouse is a really cool coffee and cakes place at the beach originally beside the old coastguard boathouse (ca. 1km from The Lodge) and now with seating inside the converted boathouse. Coffee is barista quality and all the goodies are home-baked by Toni or locally sourced. There isn’t a day that we won’t pop up for a coffee and / or treat. Toni has also added pizza to the menu - also recommended. https://reeksdistrict.com/providers/food-drink/the-boathouse-cafe/ https://www.facebook.com/boathousecromane/

This pizzeria is in Castlegregory which is north of Dingle (across the Connor Pass). I mention this place (not just because it's the ancestral home of my in-laws) but there is a fantastic pizzeria in Castlegregory called FORGE WOOD FIRED PIZZA. They bake sourdough based pizzas with local ingredients. If you are walking Brandon this is 100% the place I recommend. I have lived in Italy and this Hiberno-Pizza tops what the Neopolitans created ! I see from their website that they also have outlets in Dingle and Tralee but we have not eaten in those. https://www.forgepizza.ie/ From memory, they only take cash. Not sure if that is still the case.

Outdoors Activities

Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre is 15km from The Lodge. The Centre provides a range of adventure sports (with qualified instructors - our kids learned to kayak here as I did when I was in school here). Activities include kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering, orienteering, hill walking, raft building, sailing, windsurfing, team building, field studies and camping. Our kids love this place - great instructors, really nice vibe. This is something that genuinely all the family will 100% enjoy. It has the added advantage of being weather-proof (at least for the water sports as you will get wet anyway). You will need to pre-book: https://www.cappanalea.ie/ or +353 66 976 9244 https://www.discoverireland.ie/kerry/cappanalea-outdoor-education-centre

We swim at Cromane daily - directly outside the house, at the slip or up at the boathouse - depending on tides, mood, time of day, whatever. Rossbeigh however is the most popular beach in the mid-Kerry area. You can see the back-strand south west from The Lodge. It's 15km (20 minute drive / 40 minute cycle) from the house. Rossbeigh is a 6km long blue-flag sandy beach. We would make a few swimming detours to Rossbeigh (and bodyboarding depending on waves). There is also a nice playground at the beach and dunes for walking exploring. I spent many happy days at the beach at Rossbeigh as a kid.

The tradition of coastal rowing races dates back to the 1800s in South Kerry. Each locality hosts its own Regatta over the summer. The Seine Boat race is the highlight of the Regatta. Seine boats are timber-built and hold 12 oarsmen and a coxswain. Used by generations of fisherman in the Iveragh Peninsula to haul fish in floating nets, this type of boat race is unique to South Kerry. You will see local crews training in the evenings in front of the house. The Regatta is worth checking out if your stay coincides with the Regatta (mid-July). Cromane Rowing Club FB page will have dates.

There is too much to see to squeeze into the text limits on Airbnb but you can check out any of several websites on things to do / see in Killarney: https://www.planetware.com/tourist-attractions-/killarney-irl-kr-kirn.htm https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Attractions-g186612-Activities-Killarney_County_Kerry.html https://www.planetware.com/tourist-attractions-/killarney-irl-kr-kirn.htm
Dingle is about an hour's drive from The Lodge. Dingle (and the Dingle Peninsula in general) is 100% recommended. We always make a trip every summer we are in Kerry. There is tons to do and see and the town itself has great bars and restaurants. Incidentally, the town boasts one the best coffee shops in the country: https://www.beanindingle.com/ There is too much to squeeze in to the Airbnb text box but you can check out any of the several websites on things to see and do. https://dingle-peninsula.ie/ https://www.discoverireland.ie/dingle/things-to-do-in-dingle https://www.roamingrequired.com/visit-the-dingle-peninsula-ireland/ Dingle has many festivals and events throughout the year. Kells Bay Gardens is only a half-hour drive from The Lodge and on the Ring of Kerry. This place has amazing gardens - great for a one-hour walk through the gardens that the family (at least our) would enjoy. The gardener here won the Chelsea Gold Medal in 2021. Has a really nice Thai restaurant at the House itself I would recommend. We combine with a visit to Kells Bay itself - a nice secluded beach and pier. Our kids love the pier jump !

Truly magical for the smallies (and not so small) in the family. Really cool fairy trail ca. 1km on the road from Glenbeigh to Rossbeigh. You can park at the Picnic area and follow the path leading upwards into Faha Wood. It's pretty extensive - there's an advanced fairy civilisation that have settled in the wood - ca. 50 fairy houses. Trip takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Its relaxing and really enjoyable; we have enjoyed it as much as the kids. Could combine with a trip to Rossbeigh beach and a pizza at Emilies afterwards.

The Reeks District (that includes the Cromane area) is one of the Rough Guide’s 6 Regions to Visit (2019). The Reeks District Visitor Centre is a great visitor resource for the area. The visitor centre is at Library Place, Iveragh Road in Killorglin. You will basically pass this on the way to Cromane. The related website is: https://reeksdistrict.com/

A must-see must-visit, the Skelligs are two islands west of Bolus Head on the Iveragh Peninsula (Cromane is on the northen part of the peninsula) and are truly spectacular. Skellig Michael is home to an early Christian monastery that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Little Skellig is Ireland's largest northern gannet colony (in fact is one of the world's largest northern gannet colonies) and is closed to the public. See link below for access details: https://www.ireland.com/en-us/destinations/regions/skellig-islands/ There is a great day-trip on this part of the Ring accessible from The Lodge to include Portmagee, Valentia Island and Waterville via the Ballinskelligs (Baile an Sceilg) Gaeltacht area: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/ireland/skellig-ring

Puck Fair

Puck Fair is Ireland's oldest festival and takes places each year from 10 to 12 August. There are different theories behind the origin of the festival. The most popular celebrates the puck goat warning the townspeople of a Cromwellian attack. Most likely, however, the fair's origins stem from the Celtic festival of Lughnasa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puck_Fair https://www.facebook.com/puckfair/

K-FEST

Killorglin hots K-Fest during the June bank holiday (typically the first weekend in June). Is a really cool festival for the emerging arts. (Mostly vacant) properties in the town are transformed in pop-up galleries. Shops and pubs also become venues for live music, poetry readings, workshops and other interactive events. https://www.kfest.ie/

Cycle Routes

There are some terrific cycle routes in Kerry and close to the house. The route I take is basically a variation on No. 5 "Caragh Lake to Lough Acoose to Killorglin" but obviously I cycle from the Lodge to Caragh Lake and back from Killorglin to Cromane. https://www.irelandbeforeyoudie.com/5-best-most-scenic-cycle-routes-in-kerry-ranked/ Route length, elevation, ride time, difficulty, and Strava map links can be found here: https://caraghlakehouse.com/kerry-cycling/ You will obviously need to add in cycling from Cromane to join up with the route(s). That will add another 15km to 20km total.

Golf

Kerry must have world highest concentration of top golf courses. It is invidious to namecheck just Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee, Killarney which are regularly ranked amongst the world's top course. Dooks (only 5km from the Lodge) is voted Ireland’s Most Scenic Golf Course (2020) and there are so many other top courses in Kerry. Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve

This is the only Gold Tiered Dark Sky Reserve in the entire Northern Hemisphere. On clear moonless nights the sky is stunning; with many more astronomical sights to be seen with the naked eye than in any other region in the Northern Hemisphere. The Reserve takes in the area from Kells (just 15km from The Lodge) to Portmagee, Valentia, Ballinskelligs, Waterville, Derrynane/Caherdaniel). You will see different recommendations to many of these places elsewhere in our guide. Even at our place we have sat out many nights star- and meteor-shower -gazing with the kids after dinner or a late swim.

Cromane Regatta

Playground

Lovely community playground at Lios na Gaoithe ("Fort of the Wind") 2.3km from The Lodge up past the church opposite the GAA pitch. Just search for "Cromane Children's Playground" in any Maps app. Also has basketball / football court and football/rugby pitch adjacent.
