Track through private land may be closed during lambing season, but spectacular views and unusual to go through a tunnel carved through sandstone to reach a private beach. The tunnel was made by Captain William Cargill so his family could picnic at the beach. The track is steep and takes 10-20 minutes depending on fitness.

Te Rauone Beach: it has a picnic area off Harrington Point Rd between Otakou and Harrington Point. Weller's Rock is at the Dunedin end of the beach. The beach is a great place for young children as its on the harbour side of the peninsula, shallow for a fair way out and the waves are small. We go there, however, mainly to collect cockles. The cockle beds move around below the waterline, so go for a paddle and dig in the sand with your hands to find the beds. Once you've found them, one scoop of sand will deliver large cockles. Collect them in a bucket and cover with clean sea water. See our Welcome manual for more advice on how to collect, store and cook them.

If you like to rummage to discover a bargain or recycle or simply want something cheap to use a few days while on holiday and then discard, the opportunity shops around town are worth a visit. This Sally Army shop is one of the better ones. Sited in the heart of the university district there is a constant flow of stuff being donated by students and academic families as they move in and out, and it's the closest and largest shop of its kind to the well-healed suburbs of Maori Hill and Roslyn. Prices range from 20 cents upwards.

The Fortifications: These old tunnels and gun placements still exist in neglected-form between Te Rauone Beach and Pilots Beach off Harrington Point Rd. Drive up hill from Te Rauone Beach and park on the side of the road just before the power lines cross the road. Find the track that leads down to the rocks below. The track takes you past the Fortifications, and the kids will enjoy exploring the tunnels—good footwear essential. There is excellent family fishing off the rocks at the bottom—mainly butter fish & you're almost guaranteed to catch something. There are also rock pools. If you're lucky a seal may swim by or a ship may sail by. The shipping channel comes really close at this point.
