Shenandoah National Park extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia. The Skyline Drive runs its length, and a vast network of trails includes a section of the long-distance Appalachian Trail. Mostly forested, the park features wetlands, waterfalls and rocky peaks like Hawksbill and Old Rag mountains. Shenandoah is home to many bird species, plus deer, squirrels and the elusive black bear. You can access the park only 15 -20 minutes away from our loft at the Thornton Gap Entrance Station. We recommend to head South on the park toward Skyland Resort and Big Meadows. At Skyland, you will reach the highest elevation and get the best views from this point. We also recommend the following hiking trails : Mary's Rock - This is a moderate hike to a rock face that offers gorgeous views of the valley when you reach the top. Dark Hallow Falls - This is a gorgeous short 1 mile hike near Big Meadows to a waterfall! Overall Run Falls - This is a long hike (about 6.5 miles round trip) on the North end of the drive. It leads you one of the tallest water fall in the park! White Oak Canyon - This is a beautiful hike that we suggest to access by starting at the "Lower" parking lot in Syria, VA. The entire trail is about 7.3 miles. But by starting in the lower lot, you can due a 2.5 mile hike and see all of the falls. Old Rag - Likely the most popular hike in the park as it features rock scrambles.

With two miles of trails, as well as open spaces and scenic rest areas, the Luray-Hawksbill Greenway is a great place to enjoy some peace and quiet, watch the wildlife along the creek or go for a walk or jog. It is completely paved, so bring your bikes! The Ruffner Plaza on the Greenway is the center of many music festivals and other local activities. We visit the Greenway often! It is such a peaceful walk through town and along the creek. We highly recommend it if you want to stretch your legs!
