Grobina town is unique, because there was a center of Scandinavian settlement on the Baltic Sea, comparable in many ways with Viking Towns like a Hedeby and Birka. We will personally recommend the most interesting sights and activities.

City/town information
The Latvia's third largest city Liepaja is located 15 km from our holiday house "LavenderVilla. Liepaja is a gemstone, located on Latvia's Baltic coast.
It is important for guests to know that Liepaja city consists of two main areas of interest -
1) The Liepaja city center - 17 km from our holiday house.
In Liepaja center and surroundings are full of old, beautiful wooden buildings, lots of Art Nouveau - both wooden and in bricks, little irregular streets, etc. The center also includes the Seaside Park (Jurmalas parks) area, which has a fantastic white, soft sand beach.
2) Karosta (15 km from our holiday house), the northern part of the city, which used to be a secret military town for the Russian Empire (hence many Tsar-time buildings) and the Soviet Union (brutal blocks of flats from the 1970s just next to a 110 years old orthodox cathedral).
Both the city center and Karosta have great beaches, and you will be surprised how unspoiled and beautiful the central beach is, and how white and soft the sand is! Karosta is essentially another city, because it really has a different history and look from the rest of Liepaja. Karosta is worth a separate visit.

The ruins of Grobiņa stone castle with the bastions are situated to the northwest of Grobiņa hillfort and today they form a visually unified ensemble. The castle was built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, but the fortifications have been repeatedly repaired and modernised. The Medieval castle was built in immediate vicinity of the Grobiņa hillfort and between the two monuments are cultural layers relating to the Scandinavian settlement, indication the continuity of the two constructions. Furthermore, researchers believe that the Medieval castle was built on the site of a Scandinavian settlement. Therefore, Grobiņa Medieval Castle with Bastions is one of the sites in transnational serial nomination "Viking age sites in northern Europe" to UNESCO`S world heritage list.

In the homestead is possible to see different types of agricultural technique and home dwellers living in the whole yard.

In the museum You will found ancient household items, peculiar and valuable things that were found in waste, and some thought that it is unusable. For instance, in exposition You can see historical spinning wheel, dowry chest, women`s toilet cabinet from 19th century, and sewing machines from different periods, electrical appliances and many other interesting household items.
The most unique is the original portrait of Lenin`s in a massive gold frame, and painting of Jānis Belte.
Now there are more than 50 different items, and the number continues to grow.
