Sightseeing

Ft Macon is a state park on the eastern end of Atlantic Beach with free parking and multiple access points to lifeguard protected beaches. There is a convenient ramp located in the middle of the park for overloaded beach buggies and bathrooms as needed. Ft Macon also is a historic military fort from the 1800's with interesting exhibits about life at the fort, and during the summer they fire cannons at 4pm. While the history is interesting, the beach is pristine and easily accessible for everyone.

Highway 70 originally ran from North Carolina to Los Angeles, and it starts in the little town of Atlantic next to an appropriately named town of Sea Level. Both are cute little rustic towns, but it is the drive "Down East" with its little towns, cute houses, and wonderful views of of the sound. There are even little places you just pull off the road and park next to a sand beach, perfect for a picnic, or throwing a toy for your dog. No big scary waves for the pups, and perfect for throwing a kayak in for a little extra fun.
