Stairway to Heaven Hike
6.2 miles or 4.5 hours (moderate)
Just down the road from our home (9min. drive) is the Shrine Mont conference center and retreat in Orkney Springs, on the VA/WV border. There are several nice trails on the property that pass the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, and the Ridge Trail up to The Cross on Spring Mountain. The most scenic section is the North Mountain Trail that climbs up Great North Mountain. Passing a large cliff structure, the trail ends at North Mountain Rocks with a spectacular view back towards Orkney Springs and the Shenandoah Valley.

Big Schloss
The trail head is about a 25 min drive from our home, but it’s well worth the trip. There are many vineyards and a brewery along the way if you want to make a day of it. Big Schloss peak, named by German immigrants, provides amazing 360 views of the surrounding valleys. Make sure to bring a packed lunch because you will want to linger at the Big Schloss rock outcropping and soak in the view.
