Sightseeing

Jockey’s Ridge: State Park with a massive sand dune. Great for exploring. Our tip, park across the street at Kitty Hawk Kites and get yourself a kite to fly from the top of the dune. Then stop back for ice cream or fudge from the local stores. Kitty Hawk Kites also has many rentals and lessons for those looking for more adventure like surfing, hang gliding, watercraft, and more.

Getting to the Beach

Its a 10-15min walk, or drive: There is a small lot at the end of 5th Ave, but it fills up quickly. Some folks are also now parking at the old Kmart which is closed, but we haven’t tried that so not sure if it’s allowed. Here is the local’s tip that we do: Take 5th down to the beach road (Virginia Dare Trail), and make a right. There are many free lots in KHD and Nags Head right on the beach road, looks for the small signs that point them out, it can be easy to miss them. Our favorite is the lot next to Progress street, its large and has a bathroom. Many of the lots that are across from t

Sound Walking / Bike Path

Sound walking / bike path: If you walk down 5th to the sound, there is a wide bike / walking path that’s fun to explore. You can take it all the way to the Wright Memorial and beyond, or north as well.

Lots to explore if you want to make the drive north, there is the Currituck lighthouse (may not be open due to COVID, check first), wild horses, and the 4WD beach access… as the name suggests 4WD or AWD is highly recommend and you will want to air down your tires to around 15 PSI. There are public air up / air down stations near the lighthouse you can use. We recommend avoiding a trip north on the weekend, particularly Saturday, if you can due to slower roads and beach traffic.
