Local Food with great atmosphere
Great food where the locals eat.
Federal is a tiny town in the hinterland from Byron Bay. Only 21min away from us. Their traditional sushi or modern Japanese food is delicious and served in a kid friendly atmosphere.
There is a kids playground across the road, a coffee roaster, general store and gift store in town.
Federal is also 21min away from Minyon Falls Lookout, which is definitely worth a look.

This is our favourite place for breakfast. 11 min drive away. The halloumi burger is amazing. They have a great cafe, general store (take away), post office and bottle shop. Clunes Store offers a great range of local produce and ceramics. They also serve my favourite sourdough from Bread Social.

Waterfalls
36 min away. I'd say the most spectacular of the Byron Bay Hinterland waterfalls. Well worth the drive even if you only want to see the falls from the newly built lookout.

I am yet to visit Marom Creek Falls located near Alstonville and only 22 min away. A bit of the tourist route and they sound lovely. I have heard you have to take a short stroll through a paddock and is a perfect spot for a picnic. Good luck.

Mullumbimby - 33 min drive. This is a working hinterland town with a earthy/hippy vibe. It's a lovely town to visit on a rainy day as the street front is nearly completely under cover. Make sure you look down all the alleys for some treasures like Kiva Spa & some great food.

Now Bexhill Quarry is the most controversial local watering hole I know of. People go there, but I still don't know if it's actually safe to swim there. So proceed with caution. It looks amazing on a sunny day if you just want to go for a look.

Place for Kids
Summerland House Farm is a wonderful place to take the kids on a nice day. Throw in a towel and bathers as they have a water play area and playground. This is a wonderful place that gives people living with disabilities a place to work and give back to their community. Small entrance fee applies. Farm petting, water park, cafe, playground, produce farm, landscape gardens and local produce shop.

Beaches & Lakes
Byron Beaches can get really busy in the peak season. Whites Beach Broken Head is not the easiest beach to get to, but this only adds to the charm. An off-road drive in the Broken Head Nature Reserve followed by a steep climb down brings you to a secluded cove. This is where you'll be greeted by the whitest sand and crystal clear water. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Lake Ainsworth is a freshwater lake, which is coloured by the surrounding Melaleuca trees, giving it a tea tannin colour. A lovely place to swim and relax in the shade on a hot summers day if you have had enough of the waves at the beach.

My favourite surf spot. Yes it can be busy, but the only thing you need to be careful of is surfboards. Lots of waves for everyone. If you have a NSW National Park Pass you can park here for free.

Broken Head is a lovely beach if you want to go for a swim, but don't want the crowds. There is usually a lifeguard on duty in summer and it can be a good place to swim right a the end of the beach near the caravan park end.
