Don't Drink the Water!

Tap water in CDMX is NOT safe for drinking! We'll always supply bottled water to get you started. On longer stays you'll have a 'garafón' (really big jug). You can find water in any OXXO store , 7 Eleven, etc. We usually order water from our phone using Rappi or Uber eats. Pro tip: Rappi has "turbo" mode and can often deliver within 10 minutes or less! In most restaurants the water and ice is filtered but we recommend you play it safe and ordered bottled water.

About Condesa

Condesa is the hipster heart of Mexico City. Full of great bars, Art Deco mansions and vibrant street art. This neighborhood is colorful, filled with must-see destinations. Spend an afternoon strolling through the enormous parks, admire the colorful old homes, visit one of hundreds of sidewalk cafes, or indulge in some craft beer.

Speaking Spanish in Mexico

When speaking in Spanish, Mexicans use a lot of diminutives to convey our meaning in a softer or more affectionate way. This is usually done by adding ‘ito’ or ‘ita’ to the end of a word. For example, we may refer to our “abuelo” (grandfather) as “abuelito” (meaning ‘grandpappy’), or we may say that a man is “thin on top” (calvito) instead of “bald” (calvo).

Spanish Slang

It is common to hear Mexicans say ‘Güey’ at the end of a sentence when talking to friends or those of the same status. This is a casual phrase that is the close equivalent of ‘dude’ in English. For example, we might say “Si güey” meaning “Yeah dude”.

Spanish Formality

There are different forms of expression in Spanish that communicate varying levels of courtesy and formality. The polite form of speech is to address people in the formal form of ‘you' (known as ‘usted’). This should be used when addressing anyone of a higher status (or age) out of respect. The informal ‘you' (known as ‘tú’) is generally used between people who know each other very well and among the youth.

LGBTQA+

The country has made more progress to modernize by legalizing same-sex marriages in all 32 states in 2010. However, Mexican society remains largely patriarchal with a machismo culture and street harassment (cat-calling) of women by men is not uncommon.

Tipping

In restaurants, yes we tip. It is very uncool if you don’t tip after a good meal. For good service, a 10% tip is standard. For really good service, anything between 15% and 20% is acceptable For taxis, tipping is not required (unless they help with bags). (We recommend uber over Taxi) If you’re indulging in delicious street food, tipping is not required, but it is appreciated.

Safety

No matter where you are in the world, whether it is your hometown or a new city, it is important to be alert and practice awareness of your surroundings. Mexico has an increased caution advisory, there are precautions any traveler should take while navigating the country.

Walking around

Walking in Mexico City it’s as safe as in LA, NYC, London or Paris (just to mention other big cities). But it depends on where you’re walking, (there are neighborhoods in all those cities where you wouldn’t dare to walk after dark either) who you’re walking with and what you’re wearing. We personally wouldn’t recommend looking too affluent at any time.
