Sightseeing

This cute little park in our business district is a child's favorite! Not quite 2 blocks away, the North Pole of WaKeeney has snowman and elf cut outs to pose behind, a mural of a winter city scape, and an extra large image of our 35 foot Christmas tree. There is also a mailbox for letters to Santa, so be sure to drop off any wishes when you come through.

The cornerstone of the Trego County Courthouse was laid in 1888, and the building was completed in 1889. It was constructed from Trego County hard limestone and finished with Manhattan limestone becuase they could not find enough Trego County hard stone. The building was designed by George R. Ropes, an architect from Topeka, Ks. It features the American Queen Anne Style with an Elizabethan frontage. The highest cupola reached 100 feet in the air and the original tin roof was imported from Europe. In 1951-1952 the original roof was removed to make it a "modern-looking" building. The roof was also in disrepair and this was the method chosen to repair it. Since the main portion of the building remains the same, the Trego County Courthouse is of the oldest still in operation in Kansas today. In June 1974 several scenes of "Paper Moon" were filmed inside. The jail in the basement was also used until it was condemned in 1976. Presumably, the jail was pre-made elsewhere and shipped in. It's unusual features included flat bars instead of round ones and a unique locking system. The courthouse is open to the public and has accessible public restrooms.

This park is slowly being developed by a few dedicated locals, and has a newly organized dog park. It also contains a few shelters and picnic tables, Smoky Hill Scenic Byway informational kiosk, and an F-14 Tomcat Fighter Jet. The F-14 is a retired Navy fighter jet, and was even used as a prop on the set of Top Gun before it made it's way to WaKeeney. It was placed there under the efforts of former Mayor Deutscher in 2006, as a memorial and tribute to veterans of all ages and all branches of the military.

And, they don't call it Cedar Bluff for nothing! For a stunning view of the area, drive to the top of the 150-foot tall, cedar-covered limestone bluffs on the south side of the lake.

Food scene

This is one of the restaurants within walking distance from the Cottage. The historic building once housed the Kraus Hardware store, and was the building our city Christmas decorations were designed and fabricated in. Today, it is a family friendly restaurant, with a full service bar. Reservations usually aren't required, but would be recommended for a large party. The dress code is casual, and you can usually spot a few wearing their camo and orange.
