Neighborhoods

There are several ways for someone to access the Nueces River. One way is to visit the Quince. It is a fee location that is on the River Road just minutes from Sonny's. From Sonny's cross 55 or Nueces Street to River Road that runs along the bank going West. On the East side of 55 or Nueces Street it is called 7th Street and on the west side it is called River Road. Just a mile or so is the Quince on your right. I recommend the Quince for older kids and adults as access to the river can be dicey for young ones. A great place for everyone that is free and is just past the Quince on River Road you will find where River Road crosses the river there is a parking lot before the bridge on your left. You can park there and walk down to the river. Another place that people have free river access is below the bridge that crosses the river at the dam. This is a few miles south of Camp Wood on HWY 55 towards Uvalde. Instead of crossing the high bridge, you can take the road that runs down below to the old low water crossing. You can park below the high bridge and walk down to the river. Many people enjoy this area and often there is a snow cone/food trailer on location. Similarly, if you head north on HWY 55 towards Barksdale, there is another free access point below the high bridge, but there is no low water crossing and the road can be a little difficult, but it is a short road. There is also a park at the dam, on HWY 55 south towards Uvalde that you can pay for access. All areas are great and offer their own level of enjoyment and charm.
