My favourite restaurant. Informal, authentic japanese style "gastropub". Hard to spot from the street, as they have no sign. Very popular and not too spacious, so check their website if they take reservations (it varies). Be sure to try the Ajitama (egg) and Bangbanji (chicken)

Great vegan food! I love how you forget that everything is plant based, it just tastes so good.

Fantastic tastes. Not the cheapest meal, as the servings are quite small. But the tastes are just worth it. Also just a 10 minute walk from the apartment.

Go for a hike parts of the way, or take the bus to the top. Either way, having a beer and a pizza while enjoying the view from the top of the Grefsenkollen mountain is fantastic.

Sightseeing
Going for a walk in Bygdøy is one of my favourite things to do. A perfect combination of old grand forest, fields, and beaches along the fjord. The king has got his farm on Bygdøy. In the warmest summer days, I love to bike to Paradisbukta to sunbathe and go swimming.

A 10 minute ferry trip from Aker Brygge, the Hovedøya is rich with history on its own and you can, amongst others, see the ruins of an Abbey from the 12th century. Hovedøya is also a great picnic spot, sunbathing and for swimming in the fjord. It has a small nice cafe (they serve wine) which I recommend to visit as well.

If you have been in Grünerløkka, og Vulkan (with the Mathallen food court) be sure to walk up the steep Telthusbakken lined with authentic old wooden houses. This used to be outside the city, where the poorest people could build their homes. At the top of the street is Gamle Aker Kirke, the oldest building in Oslo.

Neighborhoods
Grünerløkka is such a vibrant, charming area. Great for dining, shopping and drinking. Follow the Markveien street from the bottom of Søndre gate to the top with Sannergata. Olaf Ryes plass is my favourite. You can also take a detour across the river and visit Vulkan, with the Mathallen Food Court.

Gamle Oslo ("Old Oslo") is simply an unpolished diamond, I love this area. From the apartment, follow Borggata road down to Grønlandsleiret, and take left to follow Grønlandsleiret southwest. You can either follow Schweigaards gate to the top of the hill (there will be vintage shops along the way) and walk back to Tøyen, or you insted follow Oslo Gate into the oldest parts of Oslo. Ruins of the first cathedral and buildings are here, along with independent small shops. I recommend checking out the Middelalderparken (Medieval park) and then follow St. Hallvards gate up to Galgeberg, from where you can return to Tøyen via Åkebergveien .
