Parks & Nature
Hunting Island rocks. A highlight of the Low Country area. Has everything_ pristine beaches (North n South Beach respectively), a lagoon for kayaking, hiking trails, a wildlife/nature center, boardwalk, a lighthouse that visitors may climb to the top, RV area, grills and picnic tables, and occasional sea turtle and dolphin sightings. One of my top 3 fave beach spots to go.

Boundary Street Cafe
1209 Boundary StA fave of mine. Fresh, local seafood. A spot where the "locals" go. Reasonable prices, picnic tables to eat outside. Limited indoor seating. Not fancy but a great place to eat after or before heading to the beach.

It's a funky, flavorful restaurant that has live music regularly. The food is good and the prices reasonable. Brunch on Sunday's is pretty good too. Thumbs up.

Arts & Culture
From the Penn Center website: http://www.penncenter.com/
"...Penn Center is the site of the former Penn School, one of the country's first schools for formerly enslaved individuals.
Penn Center is one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. We are located on St. Helena Island, one of the most beautiful and historically distinct of the South Carolina Sea Islands, and at the heart of Gullah culture." The York W. Bailey Museum at Penn Center is worth a visit, details much of the Gullah history of St Helena Island.

If you really, really, really want some local, country flavor. "Fillin Station" is it. Don't be put off by the rundown look on the outside. But it's no yuppie bar either! Its the closest we have to a neighborhood bar. Located on Lady's Island. About a 15 minute drive from Dataw Island.
