The neighborhood you are staying in is quite safe at all times during the day and night. I recommend walking to downtown Salem as it’s only five minutes away.
And if you’d like to walk through some incredibly old cemeteries East Hill cemetery is just around the corner. To get to East Hill Cemetery when you leave the front door of the house, take a right and walk up Virginia Avenue to the very top. Once you get towards the top of the street, you’ll see seals which are Roanoke College feels and that is a good place to walk but on your left you’ll see an opening into a cemetery that dates back to the Civil War.

Unlike many cities that have just become littered with rentable scooters, Roanoke has a nice collection of scooters, and the laws are very friendly for riders. I highly recommend taking a scooter and exploring downtown Roanoke.
